We humans can express emotions by telling others how we feel, but what about animals? How can we tell whether they experience emotions and, if they do, which ones? Over the past 20 years, researchers have made great progress in this field.

It’s very hard for us to assess (评估) emotions in animals, because they cannot tell us how they feel. However, when emotional things happen, they cause changes in several biological processes.

The most easily detectable reaction (反应) of an animal to an event is how it changes its behaviour. Humans often change expressions on their faces and gestures depending on whether we experience a pleasant event or not. Animals show these characteristic facial expressions as well. For example, changes in the ear position or the amount of the white of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear in animals. It is important to remember that the facial expressions of animals usually look different than those of humans—joy might not be shown by a smile, while sadness may not be shown with tears.

Another example of animal behaviour that is connected to emotions is vocalizations (发声), which can show stress in many animals. We know this is true for humans, too. Imagine you are singing a song in front of many people;your voice might get shaky (颤抖) if you are nervous. Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs, goats and cows also change and get less harmonious (和谐的) when these animals are under stress, for example when they are isolated from the group.

It seems that animals react to their environments much as humans do. So, we can infer, with quite some confidence, that animals can feel emotions. This might encourage us to rethink the environments in which we keep the animals that are under our care—on farm, in zoos or in our houses. If we can better understand how animals react to their environments, we can improve these environments as well as human-animal relationships. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

Every year, up to 50,000 elephants in Africa are killed illegally for their tusks(象牙). Criminal groups secretly transport those tusks out of Africa and sell them for big money.

In the past, it was difficult to track(追踪) those criminals. ___17___ Even if they were caught, most of them didn’t know where tusks came from exactly. A few years ago, scientists led by Dr.Samuel Wasser at an American university worked out a new way to solve this problem. Using elephants’ poop(粪便), they built a list of the DNA of almost all of the elephants in Africa. When tusks are found in another country, DNA tests can show where they come from.

In 2018, Dr. Wasser and his team used DNA to match two tusks found in different shipments(运送的货物), showing that they came from the same elephant. ___18___ This diseovery provided information about the way the criminals worked and showed the ports they often used.

___19___ So Dr. Wasser came up with a way of increasing the chance of matching tusks. He began looking at family DNA.There are enough similarities between parents and children and sisters and brothers to allow them to be matched through DNA.

___20___ They took DNA samples from 4,320 tusks found in 49 different shipments between 2002 and 2019. They found about 600 matches among the tusks. The matches told the scientists a lot about what was happening to the elephants. Besides, the scientists also

learned that there were only a few criminal groups that kept going back to the same areas to get more tusks. The study can also help them track how the ports used by the criminals have changed over time.

Dr. Wasser is hopeful that this method of using family DNA to track poached(被偷猎的)wildlife will soon help protect other kinds of animals and break up more criminal groups. 根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

A.That meant the shipments were connected.

B.Even though it’s against the law, African elephants have long been hunted. C.But matching tusks from a single elephant didn’t happen very often. D.Usually by the time the dead animals were found, they were far away.
