But long before that, when paper wasn’t invented, Chinese people already used similar skills to make cutouts on leaves, leather and silk. It reached the top during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). From the common people to royal families (王室), paper cuttings could be seen everywhere.
In our daily life, the subjects of the paper cuttings can be anything, from historical events and fairy tale characters to plants and animals. The paper cuttings are so vivid that they look like real ones. In celebration of the Spring Festival, people usually make cutouts of the Chinese character “Fu” and put them on windows, walls and doors for good luck. Chinese character “Xi” is cut for the wedding ceremony.
Paper cutting may sound easy, but actually it’s much difficult to do well. “You can’t forget aesthetics (美学) when making Chinese paper cuttings. This art was invented for decoration from the very beginning,” said Fang Jianguo, who has made paper cuttings for over 30 years. “Before doing it, you have to learn how to draw well. Without good drawing skills, you can’t make good paper cuttings.”
Paper cutting tradition also has new development. Li Baofeng is a 54-year-old folk artist. “Traditional paper cuttings are often made with red paper, which seems to be a little boring. So I want to make something new,” says Li. “Scissors are still scissors. Techniques are improved based on traditional techniques.” She has made works in different colors which have amazing 3D effects.
Now more and more people love paper cutting works and buy them as gifts for their friends.

Elephants are the largest land animals alive today. African elephants live in family groups called herds. All of the elephants in the herd take care of each other. The leader of the herd is usually the oldest female elephant. She is the matriarch(女族长). A herd may have as few as eight or as many as one hundred elephants. The other elephants follow the matriarch and she knows how to guard the family if danger appears. Adult male elephants go off to live on their own and start families.
Elephants learn by watching and copying other elephants, and from life. Baby elephants stay with their mothers until they are fully grown at about ten years old. On average, elephants live to be 50 to 60 years old. Elephants are intelligent animals with long memories. Even in a dry period, a matriarch can remember where water was found in the past. The herd will follow her there. She can also remember the safest place for baby elephants to cross a fast-moving river.
Elephants talk to each other with low rumbling sounds. Some rumbling sounds are so deep that people are unable to hear them. Elephants hear sounds with their ears, the soles of their feet, and even their trunks(象鼻). They also greet each other by touching each other with their trunks or feet. If danger appears, mothers flap their ears and call their babies to them.
Other animals do not usually attack(袭击) elephants. However, a lion might try to attack a sick or a baby elephant. If this happens, everyone will be on guard. The adult elephants circle around the baby elephants. The adults make loud sounds and hit the ground with their trunks. The matriarch puts herself between the lion and the herd. She flaps her ears to make herself look even larger. Then she lowers her head and attacks the enemy in a big cloud of dust.
