The machine had a computer inside it, and this computer could do wonderful things: it could weigh people very accurately; it could tell them their weight in their own language; and it could tell them what they should eat to reduce their weight.
The manufacturer decided to try out the machine before he sold it to shops.
He looked around for a good place to put it and finally decided on an airport. There were always people from many different countries at an airport.
The first person to use the machine was an Italian woman. She stood on the machine, put
a coin in and waited to hear her weight.
The machine took only a second or two to weigh her, decide on her nationality and the language she spoke, and figure out what kind of food she should eat.
“Good morning, madam,” it said in perfect Italian. “Your weight is 72 kilos, three more than it should be for a woman of your height, age and nationality. This is because you have been eating too much spaghetti(意大利式细面条). I suggest you eat more fruit and vegetables. Please have a nice day.”

The third person to use the machine was a huge Japanese sumo wrestler. He walked up to the machine and looked at it for a long time. He knew he weighed far too much, but finally, he found the courage to stand on the machine and put a coin in. The machine spoke immediately.

In the UK, there is one car for every 5 people. In the USA there is one for every 2.5 people. So Americans sometimes have one car for every member of the family.
The family, with whom Liz, a student from Britain, is staying, have got four cars: a Mercedes- Benz for father, who drives it to work, a Chevrolet for mother, who uses it for shopping and visiting her friends, and Alex and his sister both have Fords. All the four cars are less than two years old, but none of them are as large as Liz has imagined.
“Smaller Cars have been made for a long time now,” Alex explained. “Partly because large cars burn up too much gas, and partly because of competition from smaller foreign cars, mostly Japanese and German.”
“I’ve noticed,” Liz said, “that your sidewalks don’t go as far as the suburbs, and yet you’re not supposed to walk along the highway.”
“That’s because nobody walks to work here,” Alex explained. We do as little walking downtown as possible. We can’t do without our cars. We can do almost everything by using cars.”
“Did your father give you and Jane your cars?”
“Sure! But he won’t have money for gas or repairs or license. That’s why we both have part-time jobs three times a week. June waits table. I’m a teaboy.”
“But June’s just 17. At home we can’t get a learner’s license till we’re 17.” “We get one at 16 here. So all we have to do is to take a road test and get a driver’s license the moment we’re 17.”

There is a very simple way of measuring the height of a chimney, which we can’t measure by climbing it.
Suppose, for instance, we wish to find out the factory chimney AB in the picture(you can draw it by yourself on a sheet of paper). We first go to where the chimney is standing and measure a distance of 90 feet from it in a straight line, marking the spot that is 90 feet from the chimney.
Then we take a stick CD, and stand it in the ground at the spot we have just marked.
Let us suppose that the stick is 4 feet in height. We now walk farther away from the chimney in the same straight line as when we measured off the distance of 90 feet. We go from the chimney until we come to a point, where, with our head on the ground, we see the top of the stick and the top of the chimney in the same straight line, that is the top of the stick just covers the highest part of the chimney. We now have two triangles, as shown in the picture, and the proportion of the side CD to the side CE, in the small triangle CDE, is exactly the same as the triangle proportion of the side BA to the side BE, in the large triangle BAE. It is clear from this that every student can work out the height of the chimney.
Suppose that line CE is 5 feet, we know that the stick is 4feet tall and the length BE is 95 feet. From these measurement we have the simple proportion sum 5 is to 4 as to BA.
Trees, water towers, mountains and other buildings can easily be measured in the same way.
( )64. The underlined word “point” in paragraph 3 is in fact the point E . A. that is in the same straight line as the points C and B and far away from them B. from which the points D and A can be seen to be one point C. that is another straight line, the same as the line CB
D. where only one point can be seen
( )65. From the picture drawn by yourself, you can easily work out the sum and know
the chimney is _________ feet tall.
A. 76
B. 118
C. 21
D. 95
( )66. The main idea of the passage is about ________. A. how to know the height of something that you can’t reach B. how to measure a chimney by climbing it C. measuring a triangle
D. measuring a straight line
( )67. From the passage, we can know that using the same way ________.
A. we cannot know how tall a tree is
B. chimneys are never too tall to climb
C. it is difficult enough to measure a high mountain D. it is very easy to measure a tall building
D
We used to go into different chat rooms on different websites. If you wanted to meet someone on the net, you had to go into the same chat room. But now regular net surfers chat on OICQ.
OICQ is an online chat software which is invented by Tencent Computer System Company of Shenzhen in February, 1999. Since then it has swept the country. Its symbol is a penguin wearing a red scarf.
Net friends can be divided into a buddy list(for good friends), a stranger list(for people you don’t want to talk with at once), or an ignore list(for people you want to avoid on the Net.)You can also build family lists, co-worker lists, etc.
You can know whether listed friends are online as long as you use it. The cartoon portrait of the person turns bright if he is online. And the portrait turns dim if he is not there.
Traditional public chat rooms are chaotic. It is difficult to focus on a conversation. OICQ can conduct a focused talk without interruptions by other chatters.
OICQ has become a regular daily communication tool. “What is your OICQ number?” has become a modern topic.
( )68. OICQ is _______.. A. a special chat room for all cyber citizens B. a cartoon portrait to recognize friends on the Net
C. an online chat software that helps you talk on the Net more freely
D. a modern phone number used by more and more people
( )69. With the help of OICQ, if you don’t want to chat with someone, you can put him
in _______.
A. a buddy list
B. a stranger list
C. an ignore list D. a co-worker list ( )70. In paragraph 5, the underlined word “chaotic” means ______.
A. crowded
B. dark
C. dirty
D. disorderly
( )71. The passage mainly tells us ______. A. how to chat with people on the Net B. how to use OICQ

E
Dear Jenny,
How are you? I arrived in California last week, and have been staying with my cousins in Hollywood. I know what you must be thinking—the word “Hollywood” makes people think of money and fame, exciting films and beautiful people. However, not everyone who comes to Hollywood becomes rich and successful, and nowadays the famous Hollywood glamour(魔力)is hard to come by.
Hollywood is most famous for movie-making, and so last week we went on a tour of the film studios(电影制片厂). I learned that in 1912, when the film industry was just beginning, several film-makers decided that California was the best place to work. The weather was good, and there was plenty of space to build huge studios. Before long, Hollywood was the only place to be if you wanted to make films.
Actors, writers, and directors all moved here, and the film industry grew and grew. For forty years, Hollywood remained the center of the film industry. People came here from all over the world, hoping to realize their dreams and become rich and famous. Of course, most of them did not succeed. Our tour guide said that so many people arrived and then went home again disappointed that a new phrase was coined—“Never buy anything in Hollywood that you can’t take on a train.”
Even some of the people who did succeed were disappointed in the end. I read that Marilyn
Monroe described Hollywood as “a place where they pay you $50,000 for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul.” In spite of that , people still go to Hollywood looking for fame. If they find it ,they can get paid a lot more than Marilyn’s $50,000. Can you believe that top stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise now earn up to $20 million for a single film? Despite its glamorous history, I have to say that I am a bit disappointed. It isn’t really a town, but one small area of Los Angeles. Although many rich and famous people still live in the nearby Beverly Hills(贝弗利希尔斯)district, I haven’t laid eyes on any! The Hollywood itself is very rundown(衰败的)and shabby, and nothing like I had imagined. In fact, nothing in Hollywood is quite what you expect. Every waitress is really an actress, and every valet(男仆)really a scriptwriter(撰稿人),all waiting to be discovered. Even the way people look is not real, as Los Angeles is also the world center for plastic surgery(整形外科). I am beginning to get homesick as I am writing this letter. Wisconsin may not be as glamorous, but at least you can believe what you see! See you soon. Anne
( )72. Why was California thought to be a good place to make films? A. The weather there was good and there was lots of space. B. Lots of actors lived there. C. It was easy to get rich there.
D. Lots of scriptwriters were there.
( )73. Why have many people gone to Hollywood over the years? A. Because they wanted to visit California.
B. Because they were hoping to become rich and famous. C. Because they wanted to live in Beverly Hills.
D. Because they went there for their vacation.
( )74. Does everyone who goes to Hollywood become successful and rich?
A. No, many people go home disappointed.
B. No, but they all stay and work there anyway. C. Yes, everyone becomes successful.
D. Yes, they all become famous.
( )75. How much can top film stars earn for a film today?
A. 50 cents.
B. $50, 000.
C. $20 million. D. $20 billion.

On dry, hard pitches they break their bones. On muddy ones they sprain their muscles. Football players must be mad. And why do people watch football? They must be mad too. They certainly shout like madmen. In fact I’m afraid to go out when there is a football match. The crowds are so dangerous. I’d rather stay at home and watch TV. But what happens when I turn on TV? They’re showing a football match, so I turn on the radio. What do I hear? The latest football scores. And what do I see when I open a newspaper? Photos of football matches. Football players are the heroes of the twentieth century. They are rich and famous. Why? Because they can kick a ball around. How stupid! Everyone seems to be mad about football, but I’m not. Down with football, I say.
