Hank Viscardi was 26 years old when he put on his first pair of long trousers and his first pair of shoes. For the first time he saw himself as he had always wanted to be a full five feet eight inches tall.

Hank had been born without legs. Until he was seven, his world was a world of repeated operations. At last he had not legs, but stumps(残肢)that could be fitted with a kind of special boots.

Out of the hospital, Hank often found people staring at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him ―Ape Man‖ because his arms dragged(拖)on the ground.

He went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years instead of the usual twelve.

After graduation, Hank worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. During all this busy life, Hank had been moving around on his stumps. But one day the doctor told him even the stumps were not going to last much longer. Hank would soon have to use a wheel chair.

Hank felt himself go cold all over. However, the doctor said there was a chance that he could be fitted with artificial(人造的)legs.

Finally a leg maker was found and the day came when Hank stood up before the mirror and saw himself for the first time, five feet eight inches tall.

Americans usually make allowance for(宽容)non-native speakers who have some trouble understanding English. But they become annoyed when a person pretends to understand but doesn’t really and then creates problems because of misunderstanding what is said. No one wants soap when he asks for soup. So if you don’t understand what is said to you, admit it and politely ask the person to repeat or explain.

Second, it is quite rude to talk with a friend in your native language and leave your American friends standing there feeling stupid because they can’t understand the conversation. The Americans may also feel that you are talking about them or saying something you don’t want them to hear. If you must switch to your native language to explain something to a non-English-speaking friend, at least translate for your American friends so they don’t feel left out.

Learn just a few more polite English expressions, and you’ll be ready to face the world of Americans with confidence. The polite response(反应)to a compliment(赞扬)about your looks or your work is ―Thank you.‖ (A smile and a nod is not enough.) The response to ―Thank you.‖ is, of course, ―You’re welcome.‖ If someone asks, ―How are you?‖ don’t give your medical history. Just say, ―Fine, thanks. How are you?‖ Finally, what should you say when someone sneezes(打喷嚏)? It may not seem logical, but the correct response is ―God bless you.‖ That’s about all there is to it. Now that you’ve learned this general knowledge of manners in the USA, you’re ready to be polite in English, Let’s hope your American friends will be just as polite. 47.Which of the following does the writer not refer to? A.Don’t let any of your friends feel left out in the course of conversation. B.Ask for repetition once you fail to follow American natives. C.Never serve your guest soap if he actually asks for soup. D.Politely thank the person for his kindness when you’re praised by him. 48.In the first paragraph, the underlined word ―annoyed‖ means . A.rather angry B.very impolite C.quite unfriendly D.fairly pleased

49.The passage is mainly about in the U. S. A. A.the importance of good manners B.the general knowledge of English C.the skill in daily conversations D.the good manners in communication

I’ve something to tell you. Professor Jackson—an English disabled person will come to our school to give us a lecture from 2 to 4 o’clock on the afternoon of April 25 in Room 302, the No. 3 teaching building. His lecture is about how he smoothed away all sorts of difficulties. When he was eight years old, he lost his left leg and right arm in an accident. He struggled in his life and managed to look after himself. He achieved great success in his work, too.

After the lecture we will have a discussion in groups on how to encourage disabled people, how to help them and how to learn from Professor Jackson.

Thank you!
