摘要：A technique is provided for configuring an interface device (26). Individual device
elements (18) are stored on the interface device (26) and each element includes afunctionality and a visual representation (168). A general purpose engine resident on theinterface device (26) enumerates properties of the device elements (18) in response to aquery in a design-time environment (16). Design-time environment (16) may be served toa general purpose computer working as a configuration station (46). The generalpurpose engine is independent of the device elements (18) enumerated. A user viewablescreen is then generated for viewing in the design-time environment (16), with thepotential for altering properties of the enumerated device elements (18). The viewablescreen and design-time environment (16) may be displayed in a general purpose vieweror browser (48) by collecting the visual representations associated with the deviceelements (18).
