So far, this year’s global music market has definitely been dominated (支配)by women:Beyonce Knowles,Taylor Swirl, and Iggy Azalea are allmaking waves. And one hot name that adds more conviction to the list is USsinger Ariana Grande.
Almost exactly a year ago,Grande released her first album,YoursTruly. And over the past 12 months, the 21-year-old formerNickelodeon(an American TV channel for kids and adolescents)star hastransformed from a pop artist you might recognize to an outstandingsuperstar. She now possesses three top 10 singles in the current BillboardHot 100 chart,an impressive opening performance at this year’s MTV
Video Music Awards, and millions of followers on social networkingsites.
Her second album,My Everything, which was released on Aug 25,is the latest sign of her coming dominance. It hit No.1 on the Billboard 200album chart this week, making her the only other female singer afterScotland’s Susan Boyle to have two continuous No.1 albums in a singleyear.
Grande’s strength lies in her powerful voice and wide voiced range.Unlike her companions Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato,Grande’s starpower is rooted in the fact that she can really sing.More importantly,Grande knows how to control her voice, which is at once strong andsensitive, and use it to expand her musical territory.
My Everything is the best example. In this album,Grande literally triesher hand at everything:dance music,R&B jams,hip-hop tunes, powerballads and even’60s-inflected pop.
While you can clearly sense her ambition as a singer, you will beimpressed by how effortlessly she handles these different styles of music, especially if you have listened to Yours Truly,a more refreshing.’90sR&B—influenced project.
Of course, one suggestion for Grande’s future music would be for her todisplay more personality instead of simply showing her voiced talent.Butnot to worry, based on what we’ve heard thus far, it's safe to say Grande iswell on her way to growing into her own.
21.Which of the following contributes to Grande’s great success?A.The impressive opening performance.B.Her followers on social networking sites.C.The influence of’60s pop and’90s R&B.D.Her powerful voice and wide voiced range.
22.We can conclude from the last paragraph that Grande_________.A.1ikes to show off her voice B.is a promising superstarC.1acks her own personality D.has difficulty going further23.What can we learn about Ariana Grande?A.She prefers hip-hop tunes in particular.B.She used to be a pop star in a TV channel.
C.She has two top 10 singles of Billboard’s Hot 100.
D.She is the only singer to have two No.1 albums in a year.24.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.A Rising Music Genius B.The Music Market of Women
C.Susan Boyle and Her Companions D.Different Styles of Grande’sMusic

A public primary school in New York City has stopped giving its studentshomework.
P.S.116 Principal Jane Hsu wrote a letter to parents last monthexplaining that after more than a year of analyzing studies, the school hadconcluded that students’after-school time would be better spent on activitieslike reading at their own pace and playing rather than working onhomework.
Hsu’s letter says that many studies indicate that there is no connection between homework and academic success.Indeed, there are some studiesthat show that the link between homework and success is doubtful at theprimary school level.
An important 1989 study on homework by Professor Cooper found that doing homework led students to perform better in school as they grewolder. In later grades, students who did homework performed increasinglybetter than students who did not.In 2006,Cooper published a study thatanalyzed 15 years’worth of data on the effectiveness of homework.Hefound that homework had a more positive impact on students as they aged, and identified stronger relations between homework and achievement forstudents in grades seven through 12 than for students in kindergarten throughsixth grade.
A 2012 study from the Indiana University School of Education on 10th-graders found little relation between time spent on homework and better
course grades, although it did find a positive relation between homeworktime and standardized test performance.
Some parents of P.S.116 students are not happy with the decision toeliminate homework.
“I think they should have homework—some of it is about discipline.Iwant(my daughter)to have fun,but I also want her to be working towards agoal,”Daniel Tasman, the father of a second—grader at the schoo1.
“You have to do homework in order to gain;you have to do homeworkbecause they may not be able to comprehend everything in school,”SharonBlake,a grandmother of a P.S.116 student.

33. C 注意题干中问的是 “grandparents and a boy” 共三人,通过 “FullPrice Total Tickets” 及 “Total Ticket
34. B 通过AT&T Dolphin Tales段中最后一句 “so don’t miss thisspectular admission” 可知。
42. C 注意本句使用的时态 “would have been…”,是虚拟语气,另外44题后面sell-by date(保质期), 所
45. C 根据后文提示 “three deliveries a week to nearby shelters”, 可知这项
48. B get sb. involved
所以,reward(奖励,奖赏)最好。
60. C make a difference
而make a point (表明一种看法,证明一个论点),make a breakthrough (有了突破),make a decision(做出了决定)都与题意不符。

M: OK, don’t try to walk any more. Don’t worry. An ambulance is on theway. You know you’re very lucky. You could have easily been killed.W: Yes, I guess I could have.M: You’ll have to fill out a form. Do you have any identification withyou?
W: I have my passport. By the way, how did you get here so fast?
M: Someone dialed 911 and reported the accident. We were in the area andgot a radio call. It only took a minute or so to get here.Text 8
M: And when did you begin this sort of work?W: Let me see. Um…Yes, four years ago.M: And you enjoy it?
W: Oh, yes, very much. It is very tiring with long hours on the jobs, sometimes…uh… as much as 12 hours. But it’s exciting to meet peoplefrom all over the world. It really is.M: What exactly do you do?
W: Well, I take tourists to the famous places in the city, tell them the historyof the places, and tell them why they’re famous.M: What special qualifications are necessary for guides?
W: Well, they have to enjoy meeting new people. And they must take specialcourses in the history or the city and things like that.M: And do they have to know a foreign language?
W: That’s a must. My company will hire only people who speak at leasttwo foreign languages.
M: And you? How many foreign languages do you speak?W: I speak three: Spanish, French and Italian.
M: Three foreign languages? Then I can see why your work is so easy foryou.
Text 9
M: Er, Anna, tell me, how long have you been here in London?W: I arrived ten days ago.M: I understand you are taking an English course at this school.W: Yes, that’s right.
M: When did the course start?W: It started…er, five days ago.M: How long does it last?
W: It lasts a month, and there are three hours of classes every morning. In the
afternoon there are trips to places of interest in London.M: I see. Why did you decide to take this course?
W: For two reasons, really. You see, I work in the Sales Department of acomputer company, and I often have to speak English to customers, so Iwanted to improve my spoken English.M: You speak very well.W: Thank you.
M: And the second reason?
W: It was a good excuse to see London.
M: Is this the first time you’ve been here?W: Yes.
M: And are you living with an English family here in London?
W: No, I’m living in a hotel, but I think it’s better to live with a family. Thereare five French people staying at the hotel, so we speak French together. Ihaven’t met many English people yet!Text 10
There is a holiday next week and I can’t decide what to do. I have a lot of work to do at home, and this would be a good chance to do it. But I’d rather not spend the holiday that way. I can work at home all the rest of the year. Last year I went north to the mountains. Everything was beautiful, but it is too cold this time of year. And it’s really too far to go for a short holiday. I have decided that this is not a good time to go to the mountains. But I do want to go some place. Perhaps this would be a good chance to go to the beach. I like to go for walks along the seashore in the warm sunshine and watch the water. It’s only about 80 miles and I could get there in about two hours. After thinking it over, I’m sure that this is a better time for the
seashore than the mountains. I guess I’ll plan to go the beach next week. Oh, here’s a letter from Jim. He says he is going to his house in the mountain for
the holiday, and he wants me to go with him. After giving it some more
thought, I guess it wasn’t really too cold last year, and perhaps it might rain at the seashore and then I wouldn’t enjoy it at all. The mountains are only 300 miles away. I think I’ll write to Jim right now and tell him I’ll go with him.
