For a long time, happiness, in my eyes, is considered as a huge banner(横幅)across the finish line of a long race. I felt that only when I 31 certain things could I finally be happy in my life. A dog found shot in the head and face with a pellet (小弹丸) gun, stuffed in a garbage bag and left to die is recovering from his injuries at an animal clinic in Texas. The bag containing the 3‐ year‐old male mixed breed was discovered tied to a fence in Conroe, Texas, earlier this month. When local residents opened the bag, the dog appeared, took a few steps and fell.
Augustyn rushed the dog to an emergency animal clinic, where he was treated
for many pellets to the face, eyes, mouth, neck and shoulders. The dog was stabilized, but according to Dr. Ron Hendrick, a vet at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Conroe, pellets remain in both eyes and
it’s unclear whether the dog nicknamed Buck was left blind forever.
A Facebook page, Buck Needs Bucks for His Buckshot Injuries, was launched last
week by Augustyn. It was created to help pay for the dog’s medical bills. The page has attracted nearly
7,000 “likes” and, according to its creator, already more than enough donations to pay for his treatment.
“The last 24 hours has been overwhelming for me,” Augustyn wrote on the page. “I have gone from not knowing if I would have enough money to pay for Buck’s emergency bill to having an unbelievable amount of money to provide the best possible care for Buck’s recovery. I have thought long and hard about this today and how I should handle this. The conclusion is that I will open a separate bank account for Buck and all donations will be used for Buck’s recovery and necessities.” With the help of Facebook, Buck’s story quickly sparked international interest. “Buck is now walking,” Augustyn says.
Police in Montgomery County say they are investigating the incident, and Augustyn says she has been in contact with law enforcement officials about donating a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who tortured the dog.
Sadly, cases like Buck’s are not uncommon, particularly in Texas.

There are now many products and services on the market which are similar in content though produced by different companies. It is vital, therefore, for a company to distinguish itself from its competitors by having a strong company image which is immediately recognizable.
Logos are part of this image. They are symbols which often include a name or initials to identify a company. The logo establishes a visual identity for the company, just as different groups of young people express their identity through hairstyles and clothes. All groups from all cultures and throughout the ages have used colors and symbols to show their identity.
In different cultures, different colors carry different meanings. Some colors may be connected with coldness in one culture and with warmth in another; some colors represent life in one culture but death in another. International companies have, therefore, to make sure that their logos will not be misunderstood in different countries. 中小学最新教育资料

The logos of large international companies are instantly recognizable throughout the world. One of the most famous logos is that of Coca‐Cola. The design of the words “Coca‐Cola” has not changed since 1886, although the surrounding design has been changed from time to time. Many companies have, over the years, renewed their logos to fit in with contemporary design and to present more powerful images. Company logos can be emotive and can inspire loyalty by
influencing the subconscious (潜意识的). Some logos include an idea of the product: the steering
wheel in the Mercedes logo, for example, and the aero plane tail of Alitalia.

Half of the world’s population is affected by Asian monsoons(季风), but monsoons are difficult to predict. American researchers have put together a 700‐year record of the rainy seasons, which is expected to provide guidance for experts making weather predictions.
Every year, moist(潮湿的)air masses, known as monsoon, produce large amounts of rainfall in India, East Asia, Northern Australia and East Africa. All this wet air is pulled in by a high pressure area over the Indian Ocean and a low pressure area to the south.
According to Edward Cook, a weather expert at Columbia University in New York, the complex nature of the climate systems across Asia makes monsoons hard to predict. In addition, climate records for the area are too recent and not detailed enough to be of much use. Therefore, he and a team of researchers spent more than fifteen years traveling across Asia, looking for trees old enough to provide long‐term records. They measured the rings, or circles, inside thousands of ancient trees in more than 300 places.
Rainfall has a direct link to the growth and width of rings on some kinds of trees. The researchers developed a document they are calling a Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas. It shows the effect of monsoons over seven centuries, beginning in the 1300s.
Professor Cook says the tree‐ring records show periods of wet and dry weather. “If the monsoon basically fails or is a very weak one, the trees affected by monsoons at that location might put on a very narrow ring. But if the monsoon is very strong, the trees affected by that monsoon might put on a wide ring for that year. So, the wide and narrow ring widths of the chronology that we developed in Asia provide us with a measure of monsoon variability.” With all this information, researchers say they can begin to improve computer climate models for predicting the behavior of monsoons.
“There has been widespread famine and starvation and human dying in the past in large droughts. And on the other hand, if the monsoon is particularly heavy, it can cause extensive flooding.” said Eugene Wahl, a scientist with America’s 中小学最新教育资料

When most people travel, they will spend some time reserving hotel rooms. However, my friend Ashley and I were not most people many years ago. We decided that backpacking through Ireland would be more fun if we “winged it”.
Winging it, of course, meant that we’d each buy a one‐way ticket to Dublin, and give ourselves ten days to get back to Bath, England, where we enrolled (报名注册) in the study‐
abroad program. The plan was to visit Dublin, Galway, Cong, and finally in Belfast. And we figured that we could catch a flight back to England there.
Unfortunately, Ireland had other plans for us, as nothing worked out the way that we thought it would. After getting stuck in Galway and Cong for about seven days, we finally managed to take a bus trip from Cong to Belfast. The twelve‐hour bus ride started at ten in the morning, which means that we’d arrive in the heart of Belfast around ten at night. However, the bus ran late, and we ended up in Belfast around eleven‐thirty at night. As there were a ton of hotels around the area where it dropped us off, we weren’t too worried about finding a hotel room. But hotel after hotel turned us down.
After the third hotel turned us down and the fourth one was locked up for the night, Ashley and I started to realize that we had to spend a long night sleeping on a city bench. Like the soldiers, we slept in turn as we were worried we would get robbed. The system worked, as we were able to stay safe while having as much sleep we could on the bench.
From this experience, I really learnt a good lesson.
