From a young age, I was very interested in language. I remember a holiday in Spain when I was 7. Two boys asked if I spoke Norwegian. When I couldn’t make a reply, they ran off, leaving me upset. Back home I searched shops for old language books and enjoyed trying all these different words to express what was in my head. I thought it was amazing, and still do.
At university, I did a combined languages degree, studying French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. From then on, it became a way of life. After graduation, I worked as an au pair (互惠生) in Germany, and finally studied German. I cycled to the Netherlands, picking up Dutch. It turned out that speaking a language abroad with local people was an ideal way to learn, especially in a time before the Internet.
Traveling to learn a language became an adventure (探险)—it came with huge excitement and of course lonelier, more complex moments. I have found that the speed of leaning depends on the language and how much attention I pay to it. If it is similar to a language I already speak, I find I can use it within weeks, although perhaps not so well.

It is easy to get carried away in an argument. Having a rational (理性的) conversation with someone who has a different opinion might seem like a challenge. One way is to treat the other person with empathy (同理心).
The Empathy Challenge is an exercise created by Zoe Chance, senior lecturer at the Yale School of Management. At Yale, Chance teaches a course called “Mastering Influence an Persuasion” where students learn to communicate more effectively. In her blog, Chance explains that it’s important to listen to people who disagree with you. “As they explain their position, you listen for their underlying (潜在的) values. Finally, you look for common ground as you reflect those values back. That’s it.”
试卷第5页,共14页
B.A language lover’s life D.Traveling to learn a language
Chance first took this challenge herself before asking her students to try. As she couldn’t understand why many people chose to vote for Donald Trump, she found three Trump’s voters and spoke with them. Through asking questions, Chance was able to empathize with them and realize they had similar feelings. One man, an Orthodox Jew, explained that he supported Trump because Trump’s daughter and son-in-law are Jewish. The next man was a Russian immigrant crazy about freedom. The third was a lawyer who believed that authenticity (真实性) was important in political leaders.
Although Chance and those people had different political beliefs, they were able to relate to the life values of others. And that’s the point of the exercise — to understand others as fellow human beings.
31.Which of the following does the Empathy Challenge practise?
A.Listening skills. C.Communication skills.
B.Mastering skills D.Problem solving skills.
32.According to Chance, what should people do when dealing with a disagreement?
A.Reflect their own values. C.Share their similar feelings.

Chinese scientists found Changesite-(Y)—the sixth new lunar mineral in moon samples (样品) brought back by the Chang’e 5 lunar probe (探测器) in December 2020. It has become the first lunar mineral found by Chinese scientists, making China the third nation in the world, after the United States and Russia, to have achieved such a success, reported China Daily.
Changesite-(Y) looks crystal clear like a diamond (钻石). But its chemical content (化学组成) is different from any other known mineral. It has a high level of rare earth, reported China Science Daily. Li Ziying, chief scientist of the lunar sample research, said that the finding of this new mineral will help researchers study the history and physical traits (特征) of the moon. The value of the rare earth in it will also be studied.
Besides the new mineral, scientists also measured the content of helium-3 (氦-3) from the Chang’e 5 samples. Helium-3 is a valuable fuel (燃料) that can provide safer nuclear

“Have you done the MBTI personality test?” “Yes, I’m an INTJ,” replied Gu Ailing in a recent interview. Gu’s response became a hot topic online and drew people’s attention to the test.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a test designed to discover a person’s personality type. The test result is based on four sets of opposing qualities: Extroversion (外向) VS Introversion, Sensing VS Intuition (直觉), Thinking VS Feeling and Judging VS Perceiving (感知). After answering more than 90 questions, test-takers get their four-letter personality result, including a detailed description. Gu Ailing’s result of INTJ is one of the 16 possible personality types that the test shows.
Developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers in the US in the 1940s, the test grew to become the standard for personality tests. Many companies and organizations use it to help them choose people for certain positions. And now in China, Internet users are using it as a tool to guide their lives and relationships.

The key problem with the MBTI is that the test is too “black and white” according to The Guardian. The results place people into only one of each of the four categories; for example, someone is either an introvert or an extrovert. But many people would surely sit somewhere in the middle of these two. In short, the MBTI only gives a “simplified view of human personality”, claimed The Guardian article. It can only really describe the surface of who people are. And don’t forget that people’s behavior and characteristics also change over time. Tests and tools that help people better understand who they are and how they think are very powerful and can still help in some parts of life. As science and technology develop, people can look forward to more accurate tests that truly embrace how wonderfully complex and ever-changing humans really are.

Rivers are the lifeblood of human civilizations. As one of the longest-lasting civilizations, China has a large number of rivers. A total of 45, 203 rivers with a drainage area (流域面积) of more than 50 square kilometers run across the country, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The most famous ones are the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. As the longest river in Asia and third longest in the world, the Yangtze River has a length of 6, 300 kilometers. It originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原) and flows through 11 provincial-level administrative regions (省级行政区) before ending in the East China Sea. Second to the Yangtze River is the Yellow River, with a length of 5, 464 kilometers as it flows from the west to the east of China.
Apart from its big number of natural rivers, China also has a lot of beautiful man-made rivers. The Grand Canal is one example. With a history of more than 2, 500 years, the Grand Canal stretches (延伸) nearly 3, 200 kilometers and connects the north and south of China.
Despite their different features, these rivers and canals continue to nourish (滋养) the Chinese people physically and culturally. They bring fertile (肥沃的) soil and enough irrigation (灌溉) water, which makes many areas “a land of fish and rice”. Connecting China as a whole, the water network runs through geographical boundaries (界限) and provides people with convenient transportation, expanding trade and promoting economic growth. These rivers are immortalized (使名垂千古) in Chinese culture, as can be found in Chinese poetry, art, literature, and folklore.
