I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (大牧
场) in San Isidro. He lets me use his house to hold events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he greeted me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let you use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a poor horse trainer who would go from stable (马
厩) to stable, farm to farm, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school was continually interrupted (打
断). One day in the last year of high school, he was asked to
write a paper about what he wanted to do when he grew up. “He wrote a seven-page paper about his goal of owning a horse ranch in great detail. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and even drew a detailed floor plan for the dream ranch. Then the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. But he got a low mark with a note that read, ‘See me after class.’
“The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I receive a low mark?’”
“The teacher said, ‘This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from a poor family. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will rewrite this paper, I will reconsider your mark.’
“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’
“Finally, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He wrote, ‘You can keep the low mark and I’ll keep my dream.’”

A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn’t built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat. Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem. Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there’s nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later, it’s underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt (融
化). Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy’s biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be build under the seawater to stop the rising water. Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem. 28.Which is the best way to travel in Venice?
A. The waterways. B. Taxis and cars. C. 400 bridges. D. Boats and rain shoes.
29.What doesn’t cause Venice to get lower and lower? A. The ice of the Arctic Ocean melt. B. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
C. People used too much underground water D. The temperature has become higher over the years. 30.What can we infer from the last passage?
A. Venice is sure to stop getting lower. B. High waters won’t hit Venice any more.
C. Scientists can solve the problems easily. D. Some possible ways help to solve the problem.
31.What’s the best title of this passage?
A. The History of Venice B. The MOST Project of Venice.
C. The Places of Interest of Venice D. The Specials and Problems of Venice D
Plants are very important living things. Life could no
t go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food
by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants can make seed. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚
芽). Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.
32 The main idea of the first paragraph is that ______.
A. plants are important for life B. plants cannot grow without air
C. there are many plants in the world D. we can’t live without water
33.Plants can make food from _______.
A. flower, water and air B. water, sunlight and air
C. air, water and soil D. air, sun and light 34 What can we infer from the passage?
A. Of all living things animals are most important. B. Spores are seeds.
C. All fruits of flowering plants have seeds. D. Without plants, man will die out.
35.This passage may be taken from ______.
A. a medicine book B. a novel C. a science magazine D. an experiment report

The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.

断). One day in the last year of high school, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to do when he grew up. “He wrote a seven-page paper about his goal of owning a horse ranch in great detail. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and even drew a detailed floor plan for the dream ranch. Then the next
day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. But he got a low mark with a note that read, ‘See me after class.’
“The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I receive a low mark?’” “The teacher said, ‘This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.

One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there’s nothing sp
ecial.
Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: fl
owering plants and non-flowering plants.
A. plants are important for life B. plants cannot grow without air C. there are many plants in the world D. we can’t live without water 33.Plants can make food from _______.
A. flower, water and air B. water, sunlight and air C. air, water and soil D. air, sun and light 34 What can we infer from the passage?
A. Of all living things animals are most important. B. Spores are seeds.
C. All fruits of flowering plants have seeds. D. Without plants, man will die out. 35.This passage may be taken from ______.
A. a medicine book B. a novel C. a science magazine D. an experiment report 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。E涂A B, F涂A C, G涂AD(每小题2分,共10分) How to Make Friends

4.A5.D6.D7.C 【解析】 试题分析:

One possible version: Dear Linlin,
How time flies! It has been about one week since I entered high school. Now I’d like to tell you something about my school.
I like my high school life very much. The teachers are kind and patient, and the classmates are friendly to others. I have made many new friends here. Yixin, my deskmate, is my best friend now. We share most interests and we often exchange our thoughts and feelings after class.
Let’s continue studying hard for the National College Entrance Examinations in less than three years. If we make efforts to study hard, nothing can be difficult. Long live our friendship!
Yours, Li Hua
