Food serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific (具体的) meaning, and play an important role in a family or culture’s celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique (独特的) to a particular culture or may even differ between rural and urban areas within one country.

Sharing bread, whether during a special time or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition

has its roots in the custom of sharing bread.

Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States , pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity(兴旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which means success in the New Year for the person who receives it.

Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play an important role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families come and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to show family unity.

Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.

21. According to the passage, sharing bread_________.

A. shows a short of food B. can help to develop unity

C. is a custom unique to rural areas D. has its roots in birthday celebrations 22. What does the coin in vasilopita mean for its receiver in the New Year? A. Trust. B. Success. C. Health. D. Togetherness. 23. The author explains the role of food in celebrations by________. A. using examples B. making comparisons C. analyzing reasons D. describing processes 24. What is the best title of the passage?

A. The custom of sharing food. B. The specific meaning of food. C. The role of food in families. D. The importance of food in culture.

Just finishing loading his car, my husband Jerry went back to the kitchen. “ I guess filling

my thermos ( 保温瓶) is all I have left to do, and then I’m off.〞 Down the drain went the hot water that had been warming his thermos.

With a nostalgic( 怀旧 ) look on his face, he softly said, “Anytime I fill my thermos I think of your mom.〞 The tone in his voice was so tender as he spoke of my mother, who is sadly no longer with us.

“Oh honey, I know she’s watching and listening right now with a big smile on her face,〞I answered, tears in my eyes.

One morning years ago when we were leaving, Mother watched as Jerry was to fill his thermos. Mom then causally said,“Jerry, if you filled your thermos with hot water and let it sit a while, your coffee would stay hot for longer then.〞With her simple suggestion, his face showed that he was surprised by his own short of common sense, well, of course it would!

He poured out the small amount of coffee already in the thermos and refilled it with boiling hot water. Then he poured the water and refilled it with hot coffee. Mom smiled as Jerry did so.

Words of wisdom from a loving mother-in-law have an effect that will never be forgotten. She never dreamed her words would be a treasured and everlasting memory in the heart of her son-in-law.

The lasting memories don’t necessarily come from important moments in life. Memories are often made during those small, ordinary times. Life is about small moments we share with friends and loved ones.

25.Which word best describes the author’s feeling in Paragraph3?

A. Unbelievable. B. Worried. C. Moved. D. Interested. 26. The advice the mother gave Jerry was to ________.

A. fill the thermos with a little coffee first B. warm the thermos up before filling it with coffee C. fill the thermos with coffee before with warm water

D. think of her whenever filling the thermos with coffee

27. The underlined part“don’t necessarily〞is similar in meaning to“ _________〞.

A. possibly but uncertainly B. without any doubt C. certainly and truly D. no problem 28. The message that the story wants to tell us is __________.

A. that lasting memories come from small things B. how valuable a mother’s advice is to her children C. what a wise woman the mother is to her son-in-law D. why we should respect our parents and listen to them

Many people don’t realize that most healing herbs (治疗草药) make up today’s modern medicine. The healing herbs from ancient days are still the healing herbs of modern times. Throughout all of these years herbs have stayed unchanged; their quality stays as strong as ancient man and animals found it to be thousands of years ago. What has changed is the way man uses these healing herbs together with modern medicine of today.

Ancient man knew about the advantages of healing herbs and passed on this knowledge from generation to generation. Today the knowledge ages ago does good to modern man. Actually herbs can be any plant, flower, or tree that heals the body. According to early writings, man first noticed that when an animal was ill it would bite into specific plants, otherwise the animal would leave them alone.

Watching animals behaviors is still done today. Ten years ago, researchers at the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, noticed chimpanzees〔黑猩猩〕that were ill, were eating Aspilia leaves. Researchers found that Aspilia leaves had a kind of antibiotic (抗生素). These chimpanzees surely knew this plant would help heal their disease. Some herbs mask the smell of smelly meat. The Egyptians used many kinds of herbs to preserve their dead.

In a word, for thousands of years herbs were used for many purposes, such as preserving our foods, healing our body and so on. They can continue to play an important part in our lives if we open our minds to their importance and usefulness. In my opinion, it is always better to treat naturally with herbs, than to treat illnesses with man-made medicines. There are few if any side effects to take herbs.

33. The example of Chimpanzees is used to suggest _________. A. chimpanzees are clever animals B. man began studying herbs long ago

C. Aspilia leaves can cure many diseases D. animals helped man discover healing herbs

34. According to the text, the Egyptians used herbs__________.

A. to cook food B. to preserve their dead C. to feed their animals D. to protect their body

35. What is the writer’s attitude towards healing herbs?

A. He thinks they are very useful. B. He refuses to accept them.

C. He thinks they are useless. D. He thinks they have lots of side effects. 第二节〔共5小题;每题2分,总分值10分〕

Today is Mother’s Day. It was nothing special for me as I was not interested in this kind of celebration. My elder sister asked me if I had prepared to celebrate Mother’s Day. Guess how

I replied? I told her that I love my mother every day, not only on Mother’s Day. But I did ask my husband how he and the kids were going to celebrate Mother’s Day for me. He just said we would go out and eat. But my daughter Lucy gave me a surprise. This afternoon, Lucy came home from school. She hid a card behind her, telling me she had a surprise for me. She gave her very first Mother’s Day card. She whispered, “Happy Mother’s Day〞 into my ear. I didn't know whether it was her teacher who told her to do that, but I was really moved. I dropped everything and ran over to my mother’s home. I went up to her and hugged her. “Happy Mother’s Day,〞 I whispered into her ear. I could see tears in her eyes.
