Last year a group of friends and I began a project called The World Needs You. Its aim is to show how 1 it is to make a positive difference in our community. Over the holidays, we collected hats, 2 and other cold-weather equipment for the “store” at an elementary school, where students can “buy” things with 3 earned through good behavior. It was a 4 way to get these items to children whose families might not be able to 5 them.
“Do the children need anything else?” I asked the coordinator(协调人) when we sent our 6 to him.
“Umbrellas!” she said. “Most of our 7 have to walk to school, and when it rains they come in very 8 .”
Of course! I thought. It doesn’t snow much here, 9 we do have a lot of cold rainy days. Parents who are poor might not buy 10 . My friends and I began to 11 : We sent e-mails, called people and 12 the project at social events. Everyone had the same 13 : “I’ve never thought about that before!” We collected more than 50 umbrellas for the school 14 April showers. We were very satisfied. 15 , the kids will be singing in the rain!

Long long ago in a far away village, lived two young men who are much like today’s young men.
The two brothers were loveable, 16 undisciplined (不守纪律的), with a wild character in them. Their naughty behavior turned 17 when they began stealing sheep from the local farmers — a serious crime in this placer, so long ago and far away. 18 , the thieves were caught. The local farmers 19 their fate: They would be branded on the forehead 20 the letters ST for “sheep thief”. This means they would 21 with them forever.
One brother was so 22 by this branding that he ran away; he was never heard again. The other brother, filled with 23 and determined to do all he could to 24 the villagers he had wronged. Whenever there was a sickness, the sheep thief came to care for 25 with soup and a soft touch. Whenever there was work needing to be done, he came to help with a lending hand. It made 26 difference whether the person was rich or poor, he was there to help. Never 27 pay for his good deeds, he lived his life for others.
Many years 28 , a traveler came through the village, sitting at a sidewalk cafe eating lunch, the traveler saw an old man with a 29 brand on his forehead seated nearby. The stranger noticed that all the villagers who passed the old man stopped to 30 a kind of word, to pay their 31 ; children stopped their play to give and receive a warm hug. 32 , the stranger asked the cafe owner, “What does that brand on the old mail a forehead 33 ? “I don’t know. It happened long 34 I was born. “The cafe owner replied. Then 35 , for a moment of reflection, he continued: “… but I think it stands for ‘Mint’.”(圣人)

Perhaps the most interesting person I have ever met in my life is an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the University of Pisa. 36 I last met this man eight years ago, I have not forgotten his 37 qualities. First of all, I respected his 38 to teaching. Because his lectures were always well-prepared and clearly delivered, students crowded into his classroom. His followers liked the fact that he 39 what he taught. Furthermore, he could be counted on to explain his ideas in an 40 way, introducing such aids to 41 as oil paintings, music, and guest lecturers. Once he 42 sang a song in class in order to make a point clear. 43 , I admired the fact that he would talk to students outside the classroom or talk with them 44 the telephone. Drinking coffee in the café, he would easily make friends with students. Sometimes he would 45 a student to a game of chess. 46 , he would join student groups to discuss a variety of 47 : agriculture, diving and mathematics and so on. Many young people visited him in his office for 48 on their studies; others came to his home for social evenings. Finally, I was 49 by his lively sense of humor. He believed that no lesson is a success 50 , during it, the students and the professor 51 at least one loud 52 . Through his sense of humor, he made learning more 53 and more lasting. If it is 54 that life makes a wise man smile and a foolish man cry, 55 my friend is indeed a wise man.

Volunteering abroad comes with a bit of a social stigma(耻辱). From my 56 , this couldn’t be further from the truth. Volunteering isn’t so expensive that it’s only a 57 for the well-off. I spent 10 weeks volunteering in Arizona with America Conservation Experience(ACE), helping 58 America’s natural beauty.
The 59 was arranged through BUNAC, a work and volunteer
organization. 60 it cost me around $1,000 — a sum which I 61 mostly by working part-time.
The self-indulgent(放纵自己的) image is 62 to overseas volunteer projects. However, the work can be 63 . I spent my time maintaining trails, building fences and carrying out
projects in some of the national monuments of America. Summer temperatures in Arizona stay well above 35℃, 64 pleasant if you’re carrying 50kg of concrete for 10 hours at a time. And then there was the wildlife to deal with, which 65 my strength of character and made my 66 of the English household spider disappear.
67 do most people volunteer for? Probably they want to 68 things to the world. But in reality, you 69 just as much as the local communities and ecosystems you’re helping.
Spending 10 weeks in America’s most beautiful national parks and forests was 70 . I gained a far deeper 71 of the local environment than the average
tourist, 72 ex-national park rangers(护林者) who knew 73 of the area’s history and ecosystem. But best of all, my 10 weeks were spent volunteering with young people from a mix of 74 — from Belgians to South Koreans. When I left Arizona, I returned home having made a lifelong 75 with people from around the world.

I have always been hard-working in school. And I enjoyed gaining new understanding about study. One way was making 96 .
97 has always been my favorite subject. During each math class, while 98 , I waited for my golden opportunities to show myself, which were 99 .When they came, I would 100 my hand. Answering them 101 made me feel I was recognized by my classmates and teacher. The only problem was that I wanted to be 102 -to be right every time.
As it turned out, living up to this standard was 103 .In one class, I stood up confidently but gave a 104 answer. Even though I knew this was certainly not my first mistake in life, something 105 had come at that moment. I thought that my classmates might think I was 106 . The beautiful castle that I had built up 107 after my mistake.
In the following classes, I was in low spirits and became 108 .Even if I may have known the answer, I was 109 to take the risk of damaging my self-confidence any more.Noticing my 110 , my math teacher talked with me and learned my problem. She told me that mistakes are an important part of learning 111 they can point out our weaknesses and help us 112 .I should set up the principle of 113 mistakes.
From that experience, I realized that even though I thought I was right about most things, I was
wrong in my 114 .School is not a place to 115 but a place to learn. What I now know is that by holding fast to humility (谦虚) and learning to grow from my mistakes, I can truly learn in a way I could never in the past.

Every year, many dolphins worldwide are captured(捕获)and kept in small pools, performing for people, especially children. These dolphins are fed fish instead of having to 116 them. As a result, they start spending most of their time near the pool rather than underwater. They get out of shape and can no longer 117 long distances. It affects their 118 greatly, and has proved to have 119 consequences. Thus comes the question, \"Should captive dolphins be 120 ?\" Jeff Foster, a 55-year old expert, decided to help two captive dolphins, Tom and Misha, to reach their top physical 121 . Every day, he used to train the two dolphins to get used to their wild homes again. Twenty months later, Tom and Misha began to act like 122 dolphins and they were set free back into the sea.
123 Tom and Misha lived in captivity for 4-5 years, they were able to adapt to the wild. It was 124 what Foster had hoped for. His dreams for the dolphins had finally come true and he knew that the dolphins would 125 in the wild.
This program was a big success, but there have been others that failed. For example, another dolphin, Keiko, returned into the ocean in 2002, but 126 a year later because of all the misery( 不幸)he 127 . The sudden environment change did not 128 him well.
If people want to avoid these accidents, we must go to great lengths and put in the 129 to ensure it doesn't happen ever again. In fact, with virtual reality technology picking up, there can still be great ways to 130 kids with sea animals without having to capture dolphins. 116.A.pick up B.hunt for 117.A.see

The next day when I passed this accident site again, I simply had to stop an d 133 a prayer and since I had some flowers in my car, I put them down next to all the other flower 134 . 135 I went back in my car I asked myself: “Why am I stopping here? I do not even know this person?”

Running for a Dream
I will never forget that November day.It was hotter than normal. This was the 151 my father and I had waited so long for, because we had been working towards this race for three years.Dozens of familiar faces from church and school flashed across my view. They had come 152 me.I saw worry and 153 on my father's face. Then the race began!
For the first two and a half miles.I felt 154 .I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with controlled 155 and a strict diet.My friends hadn't seen me in weeks, but they understood the 156 required to make my dream a reality. As in all of my races,I didn't 157 out in the front,I loved the pleasure of passing people as my strength overtook their premature speed.
Then without warning,my strength began to decrease.Neck and neck with one of my greatest competitors,I 158 see the finish line.I had begun the final dash into 159 when my knees became weak and my legs gave way.Nothing I could do would make them 160 weight.
I watched as runners rushed by me. 161 I knew my dreams of victory were destroyed.I had to finish the race. However,my legs hurt badly. With all of the 162 left in me,I got on my hands and knees and crawled inch by inch, across the finish line.Voices, both 163 (爬),and familiar, cheered me on.They gave me the courage to keep 164 until the very end.
The doctors were there in seconds, but my eyes searched the crowd for him. There was only
one person I wanted to 165 to.I whispered,\"I'm so sorry,Dad,I'm so sorry I 166 you.\"He looked at me,saying,\"You could never disappoint me.Sometimes these things just 167 .All that matters is that you did your best.\"
\"But we worked so 168 .What about our dream?\"He reached over for my hand and said,\"Don't you know that you are my dream and it has come true?\"
It wasn't long before my running shoes were back on,marking a 169 path for my journey,I learned that all of the miles, the tears, the sweat, and the pain my dad and I experienced together were not for a 170 .What I realized, though, was that to him,I was the greatest prize he had ever won.

I was walking home from school one day and it happened to be a particularly cold and windy day. It was 171 and I was crazy enough to forget my hats and scarf. You can imagine my cheeks were rosy 172 and my hands were as numb as they can be.

When I was in my twenties, I travelled alone through the UK. In order to 191 locations that the public transportation couldn’t get to, I bought a(n) 192 car, drove in around for three months and sold it before I returned to Australia. The car cost most of my money, so I lived mainly on 193 during that trip, it being cheap and filling In Ireland, my 194 was stolen, and it was impossible to get another. So for the rest of the trip I 195 out in my car, being too poor to afford bed and breakfast.
One morning, I 196 in my old Skoda under a twisted tree on a remote lane in the Irish countryside, with no more than a 197 house in sight. I had a terrible desire for a 198 cup of tea and some hot water to make porridge with 199 I would not have to eat the cold leftovers from the previous day.
My thermos (暖瓶) had gone cold overnight sol knocked on the door of the house. A woman opened it. Hot water? She 200 let me get away with just that!I was invited indoors, seated at the breakfast table with the 201 and given a delicious breakfast, as much as I could eat. I was 202 to eat something more than porridge! I 203 being friends with the whole family. That was only one of many acts of 204 strangers showed me when I was traveling alone in foreign regions.
