Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller’s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, attracted like so many others by the “Great American Dream”. However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.
Miller’s most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as symbol of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into
trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sympathy:if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005, the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway. 61. Why did Arthur Miller’s father move to the USA? A. He suffered from severe hunger in his home country. B. He was attracted by the “Great American Dream”. C. He hoped to make his son a dramatist. D. His family business failed.
62. The play Death of a Salesman _______________.
A. exposes the cruelty of the American business world B. discusses the ways to get promoted in a company C. talks about the business career of Arthur Miller D. focuses on the skills in doing business 63. What can we learn about Willy Loman? A. He treats his employer badly. B. He runs the Wagner Company.
C. He is a victim of the American system. D. He is regarded as a hero by his colleagues.
64. After it was first staged, Death of a Salesman __________. A. achieved huge success B. won the first Tony Award
C. was warmly welcomed by salesmen D. was severely attacked by dramatists 65. What is the text mainly about? A. Arthur Miller and his family. B. The awards Arthur Miller won.
C. The hardship Arthur Miller experienced. D. Arthur Miller and his best-known play.

In communities north of Denver, residents are joining in to help teachers and administrators as the Vrain school District tries to solve a $13.8 million budget (预算) shortage blamed on mismanagement. “We're worried about our teachers and principals, and we really don't want to lose them because of this,” one parent said. “If we can help ease their financial burden, we will.”
Teachers are grateful, but know it may be years before the district has enough money to pay all the debts. They feel really good about the parent support, but they realize it's impossible for them to solve this problem.
The 22,000-student district discovered the shortage last month. \"It's extraordinary. Nobody would have imagined something happening like this at this level,\" said State Treasurer Mike Coffman.
Coffman and district officials last week agreed on a state emergency plan freeing a $9.8 million loan (贷款) that enabled the payroll (工资单) to be met for 2,700 teachers and staff in time for the holidays. District officials also took $1.7 million from student-activity accounts.
At Coffman's request, the District Lawyer has begun looking into the district's finances. Coffman says he wants to know whether district officials hid the budget shortage until after the November election, when voters agreed to a $212 million bond issue (债券发行) for schools.
In Frederick, students' parents are buying classroom supplies and offering to pay for groceries and public services to keep first-year teachers and principals in their jobs.
Some $36,000 has been raised in donations from Safeway. A businessman donated $10,000 and forgave the district's $10,750 bill for renting the driver educating cars. IBM contributed 4,500 packs of paper.
“We employ thousands of people in this community,” said Mitch Carson, a hospital chief leader, who helped raise funds. “We have children in the school, and we see how they could be affected.”
At Creek High School, three students started a website that displays newspaper articles, district information and an email forum (论坛). “Rumors about what's happening to the district are moving at lighting speed,” said a student. “We wanted to know the truth, and spread that around instead.”
66. What has happened to the Vrain School District?
A. A huge financial problem has arisen. B. Many schools there are mismanaged.
C. Lots of teachers in the district are planning to quit. D. Many administrative people have been fired.
67. How did the residents in the Vrain School District respond to the budget shortage? A. They felt somewhat helpless about it. B. They accused those responsible for it. C. They pooled their efforts to help solve it.
D. They demanded a through investigation (调查).
68. In the view of State Treasurer Mike Coffman, the educational budget shortage is_________. A. unavoidable B. unthinkable C. insolvable D. unchangeable 69. Why did Coffman request an investigation?
A. To see if there was an intended cover-up of the problem. B. To find out the extent of the consequences of the case. C. To make sure that the school principals were innocent. D. To stop the voters agreeing to the $212 million bond issue. 70. Three high school students started a website in order to__________. A. attract greater public attention to their needs B. appeal to the public for contributions and donations C. expose officials who failed to carry out their duties D. keep people properly informed of the crisis

Heading overseas on a business trip or just for pleasure soon? If so, have you thought about how you will get in touch with people where you are going? You may need to catch a cab or get directions to an attraction, not to mention you might want to stay in touch with the folks back home.
Hope you aren't relying on your personal cellphone. Industry experts estimate that most American cellphones won't work overseas due to compatibility (兼容性) issues. And even if yours did work, the roaming (漫游) charges would be too high.
So what are your choices? You could rent a phone with a local number in the country you're traveling to, but that wouldn't do you much good if you're constantly on the go. A more cost-effective way would be to rent a satellite phone from a company like Global Cellular Rental.
The process is amazingly fast and simple. All you have to do is to log onto the company's website, www. globalcellularrental, and place an order. The site will show you the countries you will be traveling to and ask you how long you will need the phone. The company then ships a cellphone directly to you anywhere in the world. The phone arrives with complete instructions. The traveler also learns his overseas phone number well in advance, enabling him to inform all vital contacts of the number before he ever steps on a plane.
Roaming rates are usually 80 percent less than those charged by American service
providers. Calls back to the US can be discounted 40 percent or more. The rental cost is just $5 per day, and discount packages are available for long-term rental of two months or more. This cellphone solution is becoming so popular that Global Cellular Rental actually has relationships with hotel chains around the world to keep phones in stock for hotel guests. And
for those whose journey really takes them off the beaten track, the company can also rent satellite phones to them. These phones work anywhere in the world as long as you are outside. 71. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. How to Rent a Satellite Phone.
B. A Cost-effective Way to Communicate Overseas. C. A Satellite Phone vs a Personal Cellphone. D. Business of Global Cellular Rental.
72. According to the passage, if you go abroad on holiday, what’s your best choice of communication?
A. To use our own cellphone
B. To rent a phone with a local number C. To chat on the Internet D. To rent a satellite phone
73. Which shows the cost-effective aspect of the satellite phone when an American user travels in Beijing?
A. The roaming rates are 20% discount compared to American local service. B. Calls back to the US cost 60% less compared to American local service. C. The rental cost is $150 per month if you rent for three months.
D. You will spend 40% less compared with American local service when he calls back to US. 74. How many ways of overseas communication by phone are mentioned in the passage? A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5
75. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To persuade more people around the world to buy satellite phones. B. To show the disadvantages of communication service providers. C. To promote the service of the company Global Cellular Rental. D. To show how cost-effective the satellite phones are.

Students who date in middle school have significantly worse study skills. They are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use as their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.
“Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships,” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.
Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts. He found that some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students always had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.
“At all points in time, teachers considered the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the
worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit (学分), being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.
“Dating a classmate may be as complicated as dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps see the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and could divert (转移) attention from studying.”
“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,” Orpinas concluded.
76. According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____ A. have poorer academic performances B. be more likely to hurt others C. enjoy better school lives
D. be less likely to use alcohol and tobacco 77. When doing his study, Orpinas ________________. A. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade B. completed a survey and a report each year
C. completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts
D. found that the students’ study skills have connection with their frequency of dating 78. Study skills may include the following behaviors and qualities Except________. A. being diligent
C. being kind and helpful
B. being well organized
D. finishing assigned schoolwork
79. What can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up? A. They don’t want to see each other any longer. B. Their attention to studying will be affected. C. They will miss their ex-partners sometimes. D. They will think it’s reasonable to get depressed. 80. Orpinas’ attitude towards dating in middle school is_____ A. supportive B. positive C. negative D. unconcerned
