WASHINGTON: An analysis of global temperatures by independent statisticians shows the Earth is still warming and not cooling as some global warming skeptics are claiming.

The analysis was conducted at the request of The Associated Press to investigate the legitimacy of talk of a cooling trend that has been spreading on the Internet, fueled by some news reports, a new book and temperatures that have been cooler in a few recent years.

In short, it is not true, according to the statisticians who contributed to the analysis.

The statisticians, reviewing two sets of temperature data, found no trend of falling temperatures over time.US government data show the decade that ends in December will be the warmest in 130

years of record-keeping, and 2005 was the hottest year recorded.

The case that the Earth might be cooling partly stems from recent weather. Last year was cooler than previous years. It has been a while since the superhot years of 1998 and 2005. So is this a longer climate trend or just weather's normal ups and downs?

In a blind test, the AP gave temperature data to four independent statisticians and asked them to look for trends, without telling them what the numbers represented. The experts found no true temperature declines over time.

\"If you look at the data and sort of cherry-pick a microtrend within a bigger trend, that technique is particularly suspect,\" said John Grego, a professor of statistics at the University of South Carolina. Yet the idea that things are cooling has been repeated in opinion columns, a BBC news story posted on the Drudge Report and in a new book by the authors of the best-seller Freakonomics. Last week, a poll by the Pew Research Center found that only 57 percent of Americans now believe there is strong scientific evidence for global warming, down from 77 percent in 2006. 41. The first paragraph serves as a (n) _______.

A. explanation B. introduction C. comment D. background 42. According to the passage ,the hottest year in 130 years of record-keeping is _____ . A. 1998 B. 2005 C. 2006 D.2010 43. How many factors lead to the idea that the earth is cooling?

A. 2 B.3 C. 4 D.5 44. We can learn from the passage that _____.

A. five independent statisticians were given temperature data to look for trends

B. more and more Americans now believe there is strong scientific evidence for global warming C. The analysis of global temperatures was required by the independent statisticians D. The earth is not becoming cooler as some people are claiming on the internet B

I was 13 years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before. I hit adolescence with a vengeance. I was angry and rebellious, with little regard for anything my parents had to say, particularly if it had to do with me. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from anything that didn't agree with my picture of the world. A \"brilliant without need of guidance\" kid, I rejected any overt offering of love. In fact, I got angry at the mention of the word love.

One night, after a particularly difficult day, I _____________, shut the door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope it said, \"To read when you're alone.\"

Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. It said \"Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are frustrated and I know we don't do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you if you ever need to talk, and if you don't, that's okay. Just know that no matter where you go

or what you do in your life, I will always love you and be proud that you are my son. I'm here for you and I love you - that will never change. Love, Mom.

That was the first of several \"To read when you're alone\" letters. They were never mentioned until I was an adult.

Today I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar when, at the end of the day, a lady came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her of my mom's undying love and about the \"To read when you're alone\" letters. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.

That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my turbulent teen years, the letters were the calm assurance that I could be loved in spite of me, not because of me. Just before I fell asleep I thanked God that my mom knew what I, an angry teenager, needed. Today when the seas of life get stormy, I know that just under my pillow there is that calm assurance that love - consistent, abiding, unconditional love - changes lives. 49 The passage is mainly about _________________. A. communication between parents and children. B. the childhood of the writer

C. parents’ devotion to their children

D. the lesson the writer got from the letter.

50 We can inferred that the boy used to be ________

A friendly B rebellious C easy-going D considerate 51 The best phrase for the blank may be _____________

A 1 went into my door B I run into my door C I slipped into my door D I stormed into my door 52 We can learn from the passage except that____________ A The letter changed the author a lot

B Children should be encouraged to be what he is C The mother’s concern moved the author greatly

D We children should communicate with our parents pften D

Harvard University named historian Drew Gilpin Faust as its first female president on Sunday, ending a lengthy and secretive search to find a successor(接任者)to Lawrence Summers .

The seven-member Harvard Corporation elected Faust, a noted scholar on History of the American South and dean of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, as the university’s 28th president.

“This is a great day, and a historic day for Harvard.” James R. Houghton, chairman of the presidential search committee, said in a statement. “Drew Faust is an inspiring and accomplished leader, a superb scholar, a dedicated(献身的) teacher, and a wonderful human being.”

Her selection is noteworthy given the heated debates over Summers’ comments that genetic differences between the sexes might help explain the lack of women in top science jobs.

Faust has been dean of Radcliffe since 2001, two years after the former women’s college was combined into the university as a research center with a mission to study gender issues(性别问题).

Some professors have quietly groused that the 371-year-old university is appointing a fifth president who is not a scientist. No scientist has had the top job since James Bryant Conant retired in 1953; its last four have come from the fields of classics, law, literature and economics.

Faust is the first Harvard president who did not receive a degree from the university since Charles Chauncy, a graduate of Cambridge University, who died in office in 1762. She attended the University of Pennsylvania.

“Teaching staff turned to her constantly,” said Sheldon Hackney, a former president of the University of Pennsylvania and historian who worked closely with Faust. “She’s very clear. She has a sense of humor, but she’s very strong-minded. You come to trust in her because she’s so solid.” 53. Which might be the best title for the passage? A. Harvard named its 1st female president. B. History of Harvard University changed. C. Debates on female equality ended.

D. Drew Gilpin Faust, a famous woman historian. 54. Lawrence Summers held the view that ________.

A. women cannot achieve as much as men in management B. women cannot hold important positions in society C. women can match men in science jobs D. few women make top scientists owing to genes

When Alexandra Holderman of Indiana was five years old, she saw a bay dressed in only a T-shirt, diaper(尿布), and blanket in the middle of winter. Alexandra could tell that the baby was very cold. “He had red, chapped(皲裂) skin and a runny nose,” she remembers.

That same year, Alexandra started Baby Bundles (包裹), a program to help mothers keep their babies warm. She packed bundles of pajamas, blankets, diapers, bottles and bibs, and then delivered them to centers for women who couldn’t afford the items. Alexandra continues this program today.

Where does Alexandra get the money for her program? The first year, family members helped a lot. Many of them gave Alexandra money to buy supplies. Alexandra’s mother, who has always encouraged Alexandra to share her blessings with people who are less fortunate, taught her how to request donations from stores.

Alexandra felt shy speaking with stores’ business managers at first. “But now it just comes naturally,” she says, “and I have places that donate stuff every year.” Alexandra has been doing Baby Bundles for six years now. Each September she writes betters to stores asking for supplies and donations. Then she makes follow-up phone calls. In October, she gathers all of the donations and goes shopping. One of the biggest challenges is getting all of the supplies she needs while staying within a planned budget.

Alexandra has had to give up her allowance and some time with friends, but she knows that what she’s doing helps. Sometimes she sees a baby wearing clothes like the ones she put in her

高考学习网-中国最大高考学习网站Gkxx.com | 我们负责传递知识!

bundles. And she wonders if that baby was helped by her program. “I know that there are babies out there who are warmer and healthier now,” she says.

Alexandra plans to continue Baby Bundles as long as she can and is currently trying to get a Web site set up. She hopes that her work will inspire other young people to find ways to serve their communities. Alexandra has made sure that many babies in Indiana remain cozy during the winter months. DCAC

阅读下列材料,从所给的六个选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑,选项中有一项为多余选项.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. 61.________________________________ The colored part of the eye is called the iris. There are three basic eye colours ─ brown, blue and green. A few albino people have red or pink eyes, but these are very rare. Many people believe that blue eyes are more delicate than brown eyes. In fact they are just as tough as brown eyes, although they are more sensitive to light.

62._______________________________ We only see part of the eyeball, although the whole eye is as big as a table tennis ball. Light enters the eye through the pupil and passes through the lens. The lens focuses the light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The retina sends the signal to the brain along the optic nerve. The image on the retina is actually upside-down, but the brain corrects it. As we get older our eyesight becomes worse. This happens because the lens isn’t as flexible as when we are young and the eye muscles are weaker.

63._______________________________ Our eyes are the most important of our five senses. We receive 80% of our information about the world through our eyes. We also send signals to other people with our eyes. Some eye signals are unconscious. When we look at something nice, our pupils get bigger. But when we don’t like

something, they become smaller. We cry when we are unhappy and sometimes when we are very happy. But we can also control some eye signals. For example, we can wink at someone or raise an eyebrow. Sunglasses make someone appear mysterious or dangerous, because they hide that eyes and so we can’t see the signals.

64.______________________________ We find large eyes more attractive. Children have large eyes in proportion to their heads. Cartoon characters always have large eyes, too. We can’t actually change our eyes, but we can make them look bigger with make-up. Eye make-up isn’t new. Pictures in the Pyramids show that the ancient Egyptians both men and women-used it. False eyelashes can make eyelashes longer. Eye shadow on the eyelids can make the eyes look bigger and more dramatic.Glasses can also make eyes look bigger.

65.______________________________

We do not normally look into someone’s eyes for long, especially when they are very close. Eye contact can be very threatening, so people only do it when they want to threaten someone. It is also very intimate. This is why lovers gaze into each other’s eyes. It’s also why people don’t look at each other in lifts.

A. Ways to beautify eyes B. Proper use of eye contact

C. Techniques of sending eye signals D. Colours of people’s eyes

E. Functions of different parts of the eye F. Variety of messages conveyed through

With the popularity of the Internet, more and more people do shopping online. Instead of going out of their home, they can purchase whatever they want online only by clicking the mouse, such as books, clothes, air tickets and so on.

As for this new phenomenon, people have different attitude towards it. Some think that doing

shopping online is time and energy-saving. They can buy anything at any time they like with a computer hooked onto the Internet. They may say good-bye to the exhausting journey of searching. While others believe that they cannot touch, smell, or taste what they want. They don’t feel certain about their choice. Besides, they doubt whether the companies will deliver the right items at right time to a right place.

In my opinion, shopping online is convenient indeed. But we should be very careful when we decide which item to buy and which company is trustworthy. Additionally, we should guard against the hackers who intend to steal our account passwords.
