A ducted fan engine 13 mounted on a pylon 12beneath an aircraft wing has a front fan 21 within a fan casing 22 supported on the engineby a plurality of faired struts 23. The aft part 24 of the casing is axially movable withrespect to the forward part by a plurality of jacks 25 and a plurality of flaps 27, hinged tothe lower surface of part 24 to nest therewithin are connected by slotted rods 28, 30 topins 31 on the casing 22. When part 24 is moved aft to expose an opening 35 in the casingwall flaps 27 are automatically pivoted to prevent rearward flow of fan air and to deflectit through the opening 35, such deflection being assisted by a lip 36 formed on the outerleading edge of part 24. The deflected air adheres to the outer surface of casing 22 byCoanda effect until caused to break away by ambient air flow Y.
