Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java(爪哇岛). Many people

on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.

At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He

didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.

Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins

from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills. 61. The underlined word “cure” in Paragragh 1 probably means ______. A. a medical treatment B. a kind of vitamin

C. a kind of germ D. a kind of rice

62. Christian Eijkman went to the island of Java to ______. A. spend his holiday

63. Why did Christian Eijkman raise some chickens? A. To eat them.

B. To carry out his experiments.

C. To give the Javanese a surprise. D. To make money by selling them.

64. If a person doesn’t get enough vitamins in his diet, he’d better ______. A. eat more rice B. eat more meat C. eat some chicken D. eat vitamin pills 65. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. beri-beri was caused by chickens B. the Javanese didn’t like vitamins

C. Christian Eijkman’s experiment was successful

D. the Javanese’s disease was caused by a kind of germ

I’m Feeling Very Blue Today

Every people has its own way of saying things, its own special expressions. 71 Red is a hot color. 72 When they are red hot they are very angry about something. Fast loud music is popular with many people. They may say the music is red hot, especially the kind called Dixieland jazz.

73 people sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the twentieth century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health.

Blue is a cool color. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite(相反) of red hot music. 74

The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans. A person who has a sick feeling stomach may say she feels a little green. A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves(海浪) may look very green.

Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as a friend has, like a fast new car. 75 Some people are green with envy(嫉妒) because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks. Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the color of the back side of the paper money.

A. Someone who is blue is very sad. B. That person may say he is green with envy.

C. Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.

I’m a senior student. I like English very much. Besides attending English

lessons at school, I often go to the English corner in the park near my home on Saturday morning. It was set up (formed) two years ago. Many high school students gather there. Sometimes, some college students and even foreign friends are present at the English corner. There, we practice our spoken English, talk about what we are interested in, exchange our experience in learning English and so on. I’ve learned a lot. I have greatly improved myself in English since I visited it. It is really a great help to me.
