Are you searching for the latest device as a gift? Here, we offer a guide that will help you take a closer look at four of tech’s hottest categories.

Virtual reality (VR), the most exciting tech development of recent times, has arrived. The Sony VR doesn’t require expensive phone and there are some devices you can purchase to enhance the experience. But if you’ve already got a PS4, you can enter the world of VR for just $400 (2780 yuan).

Wireless headphones

Combining ease of use with the ability to move around without limit, wireless headphones just make sense. The Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones are worth a test drive. The headphones feature active noise cancellation. They can be easily purchased for less than $400 online.

Smartwatches

Watches, thanks to the mobile phone, were becoming unnecessary. Now the pursuit for fitness has helped the watch industry push forward. FitBit has been a leader in the sporty wearable field, and its new swim-proof Fitbit Flex 2 ($130) represents the best in the way of today’s fitness bands.

Enjoying the beauty of the sky at night is a rare thing for people in cities since light pollution ruins everything. However, photos taken by astrophotographers (天文摄影师) give people opportunities to still admire the stars.

Being a full-time astrophotographer, Zhang Jingyi, 27, grew up being an astronomy enthusiast. When asked why she chose this career, Zhang said, “We all dream of what it is like to live on planets so far from us. Isn’t it cool?”

Due to the fast development of China’s space industry, Zhang recently started to shoot rocket launches. “I basically followed the construction of the Tiangong space station with my camera,” she said, adding that every launch has given her a strong sense of achievement.

Zhang believes that her photos are artworks that money cannot buy. “Some photographers may sell their works ‑ some photos even reach six digits (六位数),” Zhang said. “For me, I would be satisfied if people liked my work.” As an influencer on Sina Weibo with more than 2.5 million followers, Zhang also shares videos that she’s filmed, giving her audience a more authentic impression of her work.

Zhang said that an astrophotographer needs to be devoted to their career. For example, when taking photos of the stars, they have to film them on plateaus which are freezing at night. When shooting rockets, they may get sunburned working under the burning sun. “These hardships are nothing if you truly love what you do,” Zhang said.

Gaining experience is also important. “There isn’t a detailed guidebook for creating art,” Zhang said. “You have to learn from your own work. Gradually, you can add personal thoughts into the filming process and witness your work improving.” 4.What inspired Zhang to become an astrophotographer? A.A beautiful photo she saw on Weibo. ChatGPT is back in the headlines again as OpenAI, the company behind the incredibly popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model – GPT-4.

First announced on March 14, GPT-4 goes beyond the capability of the previous language model known as GPT-3.5. The most impressive new feature is its ability to use images as prompts (提示). Its image-based outputs can be as simple as describing the contents of a refrigerator. But they can also be complex like interpreting a series of images to explain what a joke is supposed to be.

But GPT-4’s advancements don’t stop there. The new language model can code (编程) classic games like Tetris (俄罗斯方块) in a matter of minutes, produce the code and layout for a website based on a hand-made drawing, and change the tone and style of its responses. And, perhaps to the worry of teachers, GPT-4’s ability to pass tests has greatly topped the previous version’s. According to CNN, GPT-4 passed a simulated (模拟的) law school bar exam (律师资格考试) with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers, unlike GPT-3.5 which only scored at the bottom 10 percent.

GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. Duolingo, a US educational technology company, plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function to help users improve their language studies through dynamic AI conversations and answer explanations. Another organization looking to use the software is Be My Eyes, which wants to introduce a digital assistant to help visually impaired (视障的) users better understand the world around them. Even the government of Iceland plans on creating a five-year fund to support the digital preservation of the Icelandic language using the software.

However, there are still pitfalls (隐患) in the new language model. GPT-4 still struggles to be completely accurate with its responses, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also still occasionally “hallucinates (产生错觉)”, meaning that it

will insist that wrong information is true.

8.What is the most outstanding new feature of GPT-4? A.Its ability to code classic games quickly. B.Its ability to produce website layouts. C.Its ability to use images as prompts. D.Its ability to change the style of its responses.

9.How did GPT-4 perform in a simulated law school bar exam? A.It failed the test.

B.It scored in the middle of test takers.

C.It scored at the bottom 10 percent of test takers. D.It scored in the top 10 percent of test takers.

10.How is the government of Iceland planning to use GPT-4?

A.To preserve its language digitally. B.To improve government work efficiency.

C.To facilitate students’ language learning experiences. D.To develop a digital assistant for visually impaired people. 11.What limitation of GPT-4 is mentioned in the text?

A.It struggles with outdated information. B.It can produce inaccurate responses. C.It cannot correct wrong prompts.

D.It has difficulty interpreting complex contents.

Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone? If yes, you’re not alone. These days, many people suffer from the stress of FOMO (fear of missing out). They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and for the rest of the day, they constantly scroll down (向下滚动) the timelines of their social media apps to get the latest updates.

Despite the convenience smartphones bring, many people struggle with their digital habits. As Sameer Samat, US tech Company Google’s vice president of product management, said in his speech at the 2018 Google I/O developer conference on May 8th, 70 percent of people don’t want to spend so much time on their phones. This is why during the conference Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new version (版本) of its Android operating system. This new app includes well-being functions that aim to help users manage

the time they spend on their digital devices.

It all starts with a bird’s-eye view. Dashboard allows users to look at all the details of their phone habits. For example, a user can see how many times they’ve unlocked their phone and how many times they’ve checked their social media apps, as well as how much time they spend on each app every day.

Once the users see this information, they’ll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to launch the app until the next day.

But even if users become more mindful of their usage, they’re still likely to be drawn in by notifications (通知). This is where the Shush feature comes in. It automatically (自动地) silences incoming calls and notifications when a user puts their phone face down.

If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours using their smart phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that. After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps when the easiest answer would be just to use your willpower?

12.Who are the target users of Dashboard?

A.People who know little about smartphones. B.People who have trouble dealing with stress. C.People who are slow at searching for things online.

D.People who wish to manage the time they spend on their smartphone. 13.What can Dashboard do?

A.Lock the phone at a certain time.

B.Limit some apps to certain users.

C.Limit the time certain apps can be used. D.Silence app notifications at night. 14.The underlined word “mindful” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.

A.skillful.

B.careful.

C.trapped.

D.creative.

15.What does the author think of Dashboard?

A.It’s not useful at all.

C.It should include more functions.

B.It’s perfectly designed.

D.It may be helpful to some people.
