Some Suggestions to Make Our School Cafeteria Better My name is Jamie and I'm a 4th grader at Oakwood
Elementary School. I love my school, but I have to be honest - the food in our cafeteria isn't always the best. A lot of times it's kind of gross and unhealthy. I think there are some changes we could make to really improve the cafeteria and make it a place we actually want to eat!
First off, the meals need to be way more balanced and nutritious. I know cooking for hundreds of kids isn't easy, but we deserve meals that give us energy and allow us to grow big and strong. The food is often greasy, fatty, or just kind of mushy and flavorless. Why can't we have more fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats like avocados or nuts? My friends and I would be so much more excited about lunch if there were delicious salads, veggie dishes, baked (not fried) lean meats, whole wheat breads, and yogurt parfaits for dessert instead of cookies or cake every day. It's not that hard to make healthy food taste good if you use the right ingredients and seasonings. hire a real chef who knows what they're doing!
Speaking of ingredients, it would be awesome if the cafeteria could start using more local, seasonal, and organic produce. The fruits and veggies always taste better when they're locally grown and ripe rather than being trucked across the country when they're unripe. Having a garden on school grounds where we could grow some basic fruits and veggies would be so cool. We could all take turns tending to it and learning about gardening. Then at least some of the produce could be really fresh.
It would also be great if the cafeteria could cut back on all the processed and pre-packaged foods that are full of
preservatives, dyes, and other weird ingredients. Why not make more meals from scratch using real, whole food ingredients? That would automatically make the lunches healthier and taste better.
Another big issue is the lack of options and variety. It seems like we have the same few meals rotating over and over again each month. That gets so boring! Every day there should be a few different main dish options including at least one vegetarian option. You also need way more variety in the sides, fruits, veggies, etc. Why is it always the same soggy green beans or canned pears? Mix it up!
Maybe you could have different themed days to make it more fun and expose us to diverse cuisines? Like one day could be Mexican food with different types of tacos, rice, beans, etc. Another day could be Italian with pizza, pasta, etc. Another could be Indian food one week, Thai food the next week, etc. Eating food from different cultures is a great way to learn!
Giving students a voice in menu planning would also make a big difference. You could have suggestion boxes that we could fill out or even have student representatives attend meetings to provide input. After all, we're the ones eating this food every day! We know what tastes good and what our preferences are.
In addition to healthier and more diverse meal options, I also think the cafeteria atmosphere could use some work to make it more enjoyable. The rooms are pretty dull and institutional feeling. Maybe you could liven them up with some plants, artwork on the walls (even displaying some of our artwork!), different lighting, or even playing some chill music. Making it a calmer, more inviting space would enhance the whole eating experience.
Finally, longer lunch periods would be great! Sometimes it feels like we've hardly started eating when it's time to dump our trays and head to the next class. Giving us 45-60 minutes to eat
would allow us to actually eat at a reasonable pace, socialize with friends, and not feel so rushed.
I know implementing all these changes wouldn't be easy, but can you imagine how much better our cafeteria could be? Healthier, tastier meals prepared with care. A varied and rotating menu with diverse options. A calming, inviting cafeteria space. More time to eat and enjoy our food. Those kinds of positive changes would make such a big difference not just for our physical health, but for our whole attitude and experience at school each day.
I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping to see some cafeteria improvements. At the end of the day, this is where we're fueling our minds and bodies to learn and grow. Doesn't it make sense to make sure the fuel is high quality? I know my friends and I would be so much more excited about meal times if the food was something we actually enjoyed eating. Then the cafeteria could become a highlight of our day rather than a disappointment. Let's work together to make it happen! What kid doesn't want to look forward to taco Tuesdays, right?
