In Chinese painting, flower-and-bird painting is a common term, which also covers trees, vegetables, fruits, animals, insects, and fish, aside from flowers and birds.

This kind of painting was established in the Tang dynasty and developed rapidly in the Five Dynasties Period, when many well-known painters took to it.

Painters of the Song Dynasty inherited the tradition of the Five Dynasties Period and boosted the art to its peak. In the Song Period meticulous brush techniques became the norm, and painters often made close observations of objects to get accurate and comprehensive knowledge of them.

A legend goes that Ouyang Xiu, a noted scholar of the Song Dynasty, had an ancient painting in his collection, on which was a cat under a cluster of peony(牡丹) flowers. One day, Ouyang showed this painting to one of his friends, and the friend judged from the shapes of images that it was a scene at noon. He explained that the petals (花瓣)of flowers were fully extended but the color was somehow dull, and the cat under the cluster had dark eyes but narrowed pupils like a line-all these indicated the time was noon.

Flower-and-bird painting calls for a faithful presentation of objects. In this Two Sparrows and a Hare, the painter paints a scene in the garden in late autumn. A sparrow standing on a branch twitters at the hare, and the hare turns its head at the sparrow. Another sparrow closes its wings to land on a branch. The withered twigs, dried grass and slender bamboos wave in the wind. 56.when was the flower-and-bird painting style established?

A.providing an example C. Making comparison

One Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we'd have for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day. Sunday couldn't have been more different-clear skies and sunshine made it feel

like summer, although it was still -25°C.

Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we'd been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling-more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.

Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We'd been told that then they were nursing their chicks and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn't seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose for photos.

Before heading back, we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically since our last visit. It was such a nice day. 61. When did the trip most probably happen?

A. On a dull Sunday.

B. On a warm Sunday. D. On a winter Sunday.

C. On a summer Sunday. A. felt a little nervous B. felt a little excited

A. They were told a lie.

B. A wrong decision was made. C. The truth was the opposite.

D. They didn't believe what they were told. A. feed the penguins

B. take pictures of the penguins C. enjoy watching flying seabirds D. watch the young penguins A. a detective novel C. a personal diary

B. a fashion magazine D. an animal website

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive ? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

62. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that the six people _____.

64. The six people did the following during the trip EXCEPT _____.

For example , some might say, \"I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery . It was great. I took that

dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! \"This guy's a winner , right? Maybe , maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser! He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says,\" During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs ! \" That's true. However, an honest statement would have been , \" During Governor Smith's term , the state had a net gain of two million jobs.\"

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, \" Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. \" It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company. This kind of deception happens too often. lt's a sad fact of life :Lies are lies , and sometimes the truth can lie as well. 66. How much did the lottery winner lose?

A. One hundred dollars.

B. Two hundred dollars. C. Three hundred dollars. D. Four hundred dollars. A. buy lottery tickets

B. make use of half-truths C. not take anything at face value D. not trust the Yucky Company A. Using half-truths is against the law B. Technically, half-truths ae in fact lies

C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.

69. What can we know from the example of the Yucky Pill advertisement?

A. False statements are easy to see through.

B. Half-truths are often used to mislead people. C. Doctors like to act in advertisement. D. Advertisements are based on facts. A. he is really a big loser

B. sometimes the truth can lie as well

67. We may infer that the author believes people should___________.

68. What of the following is Tue according to the passage?

70. which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

C. advertisers will sometimes use half-truths D. it’s against the law to make false statements
