When Russell Lyons volunteered for the first time, he read “Goodnight Moon〞 to a class of San Diego preschoolers. And it wasn’t reading — he’d memorized the book and was reciting it out loud. He was 4. Still, he said it felt good there, in front of the other kids, lending a hand. He wanted more of that feeling.

Thirteen years later, he’s getting a lot of it. He’s on a five-month road trip across America — not sightseeing, but volunteering.

The University City resident has spent time at an animal reserve in Utah, a women’s shelter in St. Louis, a soup kitchen in New York, a retirement home in Tucson. This week he’s in Los Angeles, at a program that supports disabled youth. “I just like helping people and feeling that something I do is making a difference,〞 he said. He resists the idea that his “Do Good Adventure〞 is all that unusual. It bothers him that the media often describe young people as lazy, self-centered. So he sees his trip as a chance to make a statement, too. “About 55 percent of teens do volunteer work, higher than the rate for adults〞 he said, according to a 2002 study. “Not everybody knows that. 〞

Of course, some teens do volunteer work because it looks impressive on their college applications. Lyons said he mentioned his trip on his applications. But charity work is a habit with him. Even before the cross country trip, he was volunteering about 200 hours a year at various places. He’s made sandwiches for homeless families in Washington D.C. He’s taught math to fifth-graders in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

He gets some of that drive from his mother, Lesley Lyons, who has been involved in nonprofits for much of her life. She was there when her son “read〞 to the preschoolers — a memory of hers “that will never go away.〞

39. Russell Lyons has been doing volunteer work because_______. A. it is necessary for college applications B. he ought to keep his promise to Mom C. he likes the feeling of being praised D. it has become a natural part of his life 40. What does the last paragraph suggest?

Being organized is an important skill for school and life. When you’re well organized, you can stay focused, instead of spending time hunting things around and feeling confused. What does it mean to be organized? For schoolwork, it means having one notebook or place where you store all your assignments, so you know what you have to do and when. Keeping clearly labeled binders (活页夹) and keeping all your schoolwork neat and in a specific place — these are the main parts of organization. For home stuff, being organized means having a place to put your things and putting them back when you finish using them. It means hanging your coat up instead of dropping it on the floor or throwing it on a chair. It means keeping your schoolbag, your shoes, and your clean underwear in the same places so you always know where to find them. Planning is part of being organized, too. Planning means deciding what you will do and when you will do it. Calendars, lists, and schedules can help you plan. You can buy or draw a calendar and keep it near your workplace. Making a schedule or a “to-do〞 list for yourself is a good idea. Looking at your list helps you keep track of what you need to do. Add new things as you get assignments, and check off things when you’ve done them. Use your list to help you decide which thing is the most important to work on first.

It takes some extra efforts to organize yourself and your stuff. But once you’re organized, you feel great. The less time you spend hunting around for things or panicking about homework, the more time you have for better things, like reading a good book or playing.

A. careful细心的;B. grateful感激的;C. beautiful美丽的;D. enthusiastic热情的。上文说那些孩子连声感谢都没说,而这个小女孩与他们不同,她向面包店老板表达了感激之情,应当选B项。 考点:考查记叙文阅读

Should We Get Rid of Chinglish?

It’s true that nowadays Chinglish signs can be seen in many public places, especially in big cities. However, people have different views on whether we should get rid of Chinglish.

Some are in favour of the idea of getting rid of it.They believe that, first of all, foreigners can hardly understand those Chinglish signs.More importantly,we should learn standard English.

However, others say no to the suggestion. In their opinion, for one thing Chinglish makes the English language more colourful;for another,Chinglish adds much pleasure to our life.

As far as I’m concerned,we should learn standard English instead of Chinglish because only in that way can we better communicate with foreigners.
