Instead of getting the latest video game system or meeting a celebrity, a young boy who was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness last year has used his Make-A-Wish opportunity to help the homeless in his community.

Abraham and his mother, Miriam, have a passion for taking care of the homeless around their neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi. The pair have a history of providing food to the needy every third Saturday, and they recently got added help from the Make-A-Wish foundation in Mississippi after he was diagnosed with a rare disease, aplastic anemia, in 2020. The condition causes the body to stop producing enough new blood cells, leaving patients exhausted and easier to suffer infection and uncontrolled bleeding. Abraham later

experienced a successful bone marrow transplant(骨髓移植) and found out he was qualified to have one of his dreams fulfilled by Make-A-Wish. It didn’t take long for Abraham to think of the perfect choice. He would continue the mission that was important to him and his mom. With the help of the foundation, Abraham fed about 80 people in Jackson in September. When the homeless people got the plate, some of them would come back and sing to them and thank them. “And it just really feels good; it warms our hearts. And my parents always taught me that it’s a blessing to be a blessing,” Abraham said.

Not only that, but Make-A-Wish said they would help Abraham feed the homeless in Jackson every third Saturday until August 2022, ensuring that he could help even more people in need. Abraham did receive a few gifts from Make-A-Wish, including a new laptop, a ring light, and a microphone to help him start a channel on a social media platform. He also plans to start a non-profit called “Abraham’s Table” to continue his mission. 4、How often do Abraham and his mom offer food to those in need? A.At least once a day. C.At least once a month.

B.At least once a week. D.At least once a year.

5、What can we infer about Abraham from paragraph 3? A.He is doing what he wants to. C.He decided to support his family. 6、What does Abraham mean to do? A.Start a public welfare program.

B.Send more Make-A-Wish cards. B.He has been completely cured. D.He got a mission from an organization.

C.Join a non-profit organization. D.Feed the homeless every Saturday.

7、Which of the following can best describe Abraham? A.Imaginative and practical. C.Caring and considerate.

B.Ambitious and creative. D.Determined and patient.

Can people who understand the emotions of others better interpret emotions conveyed through music? A new study by an international team of researchers suggests the abilities are linked.

The study’s results provide a foundation for future research that could test the impact of socially engaged music listening on social cognitive ability, and whether listening to music can be added to therapeutic(治疗的) techniques used in social skills training for individuals with autism spectrum disorder(孤独症谱系障碍).

The findings were published recently in a scientific journal of the American Psychological Association. The study was led by Benjamin A. Tabak, assistant professor of psychology. “Empathy (共情) is most often thought of in the context of social interactions, but there are many other forms of social communication, including music,” Tabak said. “Music can convey meaning and emotion and also bring emotional responses, but what is responsible for its emotional power is poorly understood.”

Tabak and his colleagues wanted to test their theory about empathy and music. For the purposes of this study, they measured the ability to correctly understand others’ thoughts and feelings—empathic accuracy—and the extent to which one feels the emotions that another feels.

“We thought it would be interesting to study whether people who more accurately understand others’ thoughts and feelings might also be more accurate in understanding what musicians are intending to convey through music,” Tabak said. “Similarly, we wanted to know whether people who tend to feel the emotions that others are experiencing also tend to feel the emotions conveyed through music.”

The initial set of findings found support for both hypotheses. In particular, the results suggest that empathic accuracy as a skill extends beyond interpersonal interactions into music. Tabak believes that the study provides tentative support for the theory that music is first and foremost a social behavior that gradually develops to help individuals connect with others and better understand and manage their social environment. 8、What can the study result be used to do? A.Be the basis for the next study.

B.Apply music to social skills training.

C.Decide the music suitable for autism. D.Test the impact of music on emotions.

9、About the link between music and emotions, what needs further understanding? A.The effect of music. C.The function of music.

B.The academic support. D.The emotions music expresses.

10、What is Tabak’s attitude towards the study? A.Ignorant.

B.Confident.

C.Pessimistic.

D.Doubtful.

11、Which can be the best title for the text? A.The Social Behavior Music Reflects

B.The Ability To Accurately Understand Empathy C.Research Shows The Role Empathy May Play In Music D.Research Will Set Foundation For Further Research

34、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When we lost our beloved ones, we must feel heartbroken. However, we can do something to make the world remember them.

My little boy, Matthew, had recently lost his beloved grandma. He would often push hard my hand in tears, longing for his grandma to come back to the world. One day, he had an idea. He asked me if we could do something in honor of Grandma so the world could remember her. When I welcomed his lovely suggestion, he said we could create something special for the children at the hospital, since Grandma had always wanted to volunteer there. Although her heart was so ready to give, her physical capacity was limited. She couldn’t drive or make the long walk over to the hospital and therefore had spent the majority of her days doing what she could for her family and friends. So, we decided to fulfill Grandma’s last life wish.

Matthew and I teamed up and presented our kindness proposal to his preschool classmates. We energized them with the prospect of going shopping and purchasing small

gifts(chocolates, flowers, and cards) which they could put into handcrafted holiday baskets which the kids themselves could make. It would be a basket which was wholly made by one child and solely for another. As the young faces happily agreed, we were off on executing our plan!

Matthew and I scouted out(搜索) the most child-friendly stores and distributed fliers(传单) at these locations so the store owners were aware of our plan and could bring their most cherished items for the preschoolers to purchase. Matthew’s preschool peers selectively made their picks, and after we collected all of the items, we placed the chocolates, flowers, and got well cards into seven beautifully crafted baskets for the bedridden children at our local Children’s Hospital. When Matthew and two of his other little mates came to the hospital to make their deliveries, they were greeted with a tour of the facilities before they entered into each hospital room to change a sick child into a smiling one. 注意:

34、答案:

Now, five years have passed, and the Matthew \"hospital” tradition has continued. We continue to make the baskets of sweetness and wellness for the children. The children together with us are continuously increasing, because as this event has become a permanent thing in our lives, so have these children too. In this spirit of expansion, we have seen this sense of community spread as the gift baskets now include not only items we purchase from stores, but also donated items from Matthew's school and our church.

Matthew's school and the local church have contributed to the rise of gift baskets. The number of gift baskets have risen from seven to fifty. In addition to distributing the baskets to our local children's hospital, we now work together to distribute them to other children's hospitals that assist children who are suffering cancer. Seeing the children's smiles makes us delighted and encouraged. My little Matthew finally has helped his beloved grandma achieve her dream. Her spirit of kindness will always live on in the hearts of these small children.
