Karen Woolley had a dream and the only way she was going to make it come true was to purchase farmland. She and her husband, Glen, decided to buy a farm near Lakehurst, Oct., in 2000. With a barn (畜棚) built in the mid-1800s, as well as a farmhouse on the property, they were set to start purchasing animals that can be kept on a farm to fill the barn.

Karen’s love of animals kept spilling over into other parts of the bar; this is when she decided share these critters (家畜) with the world, including city kids who were rarely around farm animals, and seniors in nursing homes who had been farmers themselves for many years.

Karen bought a vehicle and started taking her animals to visit various groups in the community. Off she went with her baby rabbits, chicks, ducks, and geese. With a low fenced-in area, crowds of people excitedly picked up the critters to hold and touch as they admired nature in unusual locations.

Back on the farm, Karen’s daughter, Fiona, is in charge of the heated hen house. She feeds and cleans their pens and makes sure they are comfortable until the heat of late spring arrives. Later, all are sent out into the field to enjoy the sweet grasses and sunshine. With Glen’s help, fences are fixed, feeding stations are built and animals are fed regularly to keep everyone happy and the farm in working condition.

With her efforts coming along as planned, Karen continues to share her critters far and wide. She enjoys seeing people’s reactions when a little duck is placed in the hands of young or old alike — it provides such satisfaction to a lady who wants to share her dream. 14.What did Karen decide to do in 2000?

Sometimes when we eat, what we’re hungry for isn’t food — it’s the taste of memory. Studies show that foods we think of as comfort foods don’t contain any magical properties. What might be comforting is the feeling of proximity (亲近) to other people associated with the foods.

Thoughts about comfort foods are often linked to calories, warmth or a sense of well-being, but what we don’t think about is that they also provide something social to us. People like comfort foods because of their ability to make them feel that they belong.

When Marcel Proust, author of Remembrance of Things Past, bit into a cake at his aunt’s house, he was overwhelmed by a feeling of nostalgia. Where had this “all-powerful joy ” come from? He sensed that it was connected to the taste of tea and cake, but it “ went far beyond” those flavors, he wrote. In Proust’s case, the taste he experienced took him back to childhood experiences with a beloved aunt, to whom he formed a strong bond.

Comfort foods are often thought of as being rich in calories or full of sugar. Nevertheless, other studies have also shown that the line between comfort and food isn’t as clear as “ junk food = happiness. ” Eating so-called junk food

does activate the brain’s reward system, but that high is short-lived. It’s not the deep reward of real comfort. On the other hand, if you feel bad, you might as well have a salad, as long as there is something in the food to bring back pleasant memories and create a sense of belonging. Taste and smell, Proust wrote, “ stay fresh a long time. ” 18.How do comfort foods function? A.They inspire a sense of belonging. B.They are linked to all-powerful joy. C.They provide the calories one needs. D.They set off the brain’s reward system.

19.Why does the author mention Marcel Proust in Para. 3?

A.To express love for a special cake. B.To share a good childhood memory. C.To. show the nature of comfort foods. foods.

20.What does Para. 4 mainly talk about? A.The less clear line between comfort and food. B.The connection between junk food and happiness. C.The difference between comfort foods and junk food. D.The relationship between comfort foods and reward system. 21.Where does the passage probably come from? A.A science report. C.A cooking guide.

Have you ever sat in hospital bed with the doctors around talking about you as though you didn’t exist? Research into patients’ view of healthcare has shown that this is common. This behaviour gets to the root of how patients evaluate the quality of care they receive.

While doctors like to focus on treatment outcomes, this isn’t how the public assess whether their doctor is good. Research has consistently shown that most patients evaluate their experiences on how polite the doctor was, not on the actual quality of medicine practised.

My mum, for example, recently started losing her sight. She went for an

urgent appointment with an eye specialist at her local NHS hospital. When I telephoned her that evening to see how it went, she replied, “Oh, they were all so lovely and kind.” In fact, the clinic was running late and she’d had to wait an hour to see the nurse, and three hours to see the consultant. From a medical perspective, the consultation clearly hadn’t been a success. While they’d ruled out emergency causes for her sight loss, they hadn’t really got to the bottom of the problem. She was now back at home, still unable to see properly and with no idea if she was going to go permanently blind. But what mattered to her was that a nurse had met her at the door and took her to her seat. They’d asked about how the loss of sight had impacted on her life, so my mum felt she had received good care simply because the doctors and nurses had listened to her.

Patients don’t evaluate the actual medicine; it’s the communication skills of the doctor or the nurse that determine how they evaluate the care. If doctors or nurses listened to their patients, that means we can improve the NHS(英国国民健康保险制度)without spending money. 22.What do we know about the research? A.Doctors tend to talk a lot.

B.Patients find the root of the problem.

C.Doctors undervalue patients’ subjective feeling.

D.Patients think highly of the quality of their medical treatment. 23.Why did the author’s mother praise the doctors and nurses?

A.They stayed late to find the cause. B.They cured her of her loss of sight. C.They showed great concern for her. D.They reacted slowly to her condition.

24.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Doctors should be good communicators. B.Patients ought to be more understanding.

C.Communication skills are the most critical for doctors. D.The government should invest more money in health care system. 25.Where is this text most likely from? A.A guidbook.

B.A magazine.

C.A diary.

D.A novel.

That you start out on one career doesn’t mean you’re stuck on it forever. People decide to change careers for many reasons. For example, your career goals have changed, 26 or you want a more flexible schedule. The bottom line: it’s never too late to make a change. So if you’re thinking about moving in a new direction, here are a few tips:

Think about why you want to leave. It’s important to pinpoint what makes your current job not satisfying. Maybe your problem is with your boss. Maybe your personal values have shifted to something dramatically different.

Assess your abilities. What skills do you have that would be valuable in other types of roles? If you’re stumped, try reading over the job description for your current position to see what types of skills you use every day. 27 Plenty of companies value employees with those kinds of abilities. Chances are that you bring much more to the table than you realize.

Research potential new careers. And don’t limit yourself to online searches. The best way to find out what a job is really like is to talk to someone who has it. Reach out to your network of contacts and try to set up informational interviews with people who do the kind of work you’re interested in. 28

Revise your resume(简历). If you’ve worked for many years in one industry but are trying to make the leap to another, 29 . You will probably want to write a functional resume which emphasizes your skills rather than a traditional chronological resume, which focuses on your work history. Include details about any projects you’ve done that demonstrate your qualifications.

30 Hiring managers get suspicious when they see gaps on a resume so it’s good to stay put until you line up a new position.

A.your previous resume may fit it all

B.your resume will need some serious revisions

C.Can you think critically communicate effectively or work well on a team? D.If possible, shadow someone at work so you can get a realistic view of what’s involved.
