Potatoes

Shelf life:2 to 5 weeks if stored in a cool, dry, dark place

Yukon Gold, red, and fingerling potatoeswill last from two to three weeks. Larger white potatoes can last for three to five weeks. Sweet potatoes have about the same shelf life. Don't store them next to onions, however. The two might go together well in cooking, but raw, each gives off gases and moisture that might cause the other to spoil faster.

Dried tea leaves, whether loose (in a sealed container) or in teabags (in an unopened box) can easily last a year or more if they' re not subjected to damp or humidity. However, the tea does tend to lose flavor over time.

Peanuts

Peanuts in their shell, especially when kept cool and dry, are perfectly happy in the cupboard for as long as two months.

Canned fruits and vegetables

● Shelf life:1 to 2 years past \"sell - by” date

Canning is an extremely efficient means of preserving food. Generally speaking, if canned foods aren't subjected to extreme heat, their contents should stay good for two years or more. The first patient who died on my watch was an older man with a faulty heart. We tried to slow it down with treatment, but it suddenly stopped beating completely. Later, whenever I would have a case like that one, I found myself second-guessing my clinical management. However, it turns out that thinking twice may actually cause more harm than good.

In a working paper, Emory University researchers found that when doctors delivering a baby have a bad result, they are more likely to switch to a different delivery method with the next patient, often unnecessarily and sometimes with worse results.

Because doctors make so many decisions that have serious consequences, thefalloutfrom second-guessing appears especially large for us. A 2006 study found that if a patient had a bleed after being prescribed (开药) warfarin, the physician was about 20% less likely to prescribe later patients the blood thinner that prevents strokes (中风). However, if a patient was not on warfarin and had a stroke physicians were still no more likely to prescribe warfarin to their other patients.

These findings highlight interesting behavioral patterns in doctors. In the blood-thinner study, doctors were more affected by the act of doing harm (prescribing a blood thinner that ended up hurting doctors were more affected by the act of doing harm(prescribing a blood thinner that ended up hurting a patient) and less affected by letting harm happen (not prescribing a blood thinner and the patient having a stroke). Yet a stroke is often more permanent and damaging than a bleed.

But this phenomenon is not unique to medicine. ''Overreaction to Fearsome Risks'' holds true for broader

society.

For instance, sensational headlines about shark attacks on humans in Florida in 2001 caused a panic and led the state to prohibit shark-feeding expeditions. Yet shark attacks had actually fallen that year and, according to the study, such a change was probably unnecessary given the extremely small risk of such an attack happening.

Humans are likely to be influenced by emotional and often irrational (不理性的) thinking when processing information, bad events and mistakes. As much as we don't want to cause an unfortunate event to happen again, we need to be aware that a worst situation that can be imagined doesn't necessarily mean we did anything wrong. When we overthink, we fail to rely on thinking based on what we know or have experienced. Instead, we may involuntarily overanalyze and come to the wrong conclusion.

I have treated dozens of patients who presented with the same illnesses as my first patient, who died more than a year ago. Instead of second-guessing myself, I trusted my clinical instinct (本能) and stayed the course. Every one of those patients survived. You should trust your instinct in your life, too. 8. The first two paragraphs suggest that________. A. bad medical outcomes affect doctors B delivering babies can be difficult work C. some doctors are not very experienced D. doctors sometimes make silly mistakes 9. In the blood-thinner study, doctors________. A. tend to prescribe less effective medicine B. are more concerned about the patients' safety C. become less confident in writing a prescription D. believe a stroke is more treatable than a bleeding

10. What does the underlined word ''fallout'' in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Result B. Benefit C. Difference D. Absence 11. The author will probably agree that________. A. we should not doubt our own decisions B. our experience will pave way for our future C. humans are emotional and irrational on the whole D. instincts don't necessarily lead to wrong directions

D

Avi Loeb, a scientist, believes that we are not alone in the universe. The belief fits withLoeb's alien spaceship theory that at least one alien spaceship might be flying over the orbit of Jupiter, which won the international attention last year.

Astronomers inHawaiifound the first known interstellar object in late 2017. It was a bit of light moving so fast past the sun that it could only have come from another star. Almost every astronomer on the planet was trying to figure out how the object, called “Oumuamua” got to our far-away part of the Milky way galaxy. “One possibility is that ‘Oumuamua’ is debris from an advanced technological equipment,” Loeb said. “Technology comes from another solar system just showed up at our door. ”

“‘Oumuamua’ is not an alien spaceship,” Paul Sutter, another scientist wrote. He suggested Loeb was seeking publicity. Most scientists think “Oumuamua” is some sort of rock. They think it could be an icy wandering comet.

Loeb says that “Oumuamua's” behavior means it can't be a block of rock shaped like a long photo. He thinks it's more likely an object that's very long and thin, perhaps like a long pancake or a ship's sail. Loeb says that if someone shows him evidence thatcontradictshis beliefs, he will immediately give in.

Loeb believes himself a truth-teller and risk-taker in an age of very safe, too-quiet scientists. “The worst thing that can happen to me is that I would be relieved of my management duties, and that would give me even more time to focus on science,” Loeb says. He said he wouldn't mind giving up all the titles he had and returning to the Israeli farming village where he grew up. 12. What does Loeb say about “Oumuamua”?

A. It is an icy comet. B. It looks like a long photo.

C. It is actually some sort of rock. D. It may come from another alien civilization. 13. What does the underlined word “contradicts” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Goes against. B. Relies on. C. Turns to. D. Searches for. 14. What do you think of Loeb?

A. He is foolish. B. He is unsatisfied with his titles.

C. He is a firm believer in scientific truth. D. He is uncertain about his career future. 15. What's the best title for the text?

A. Have Aliens Paid a Visit in Spaceships? B. Do We Really Know about Space Theory? C. Scientists Are Working on High Technology D. Astronomers Are Encouraging Space Travel 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

I was touched through experiences, memories, books, stories, animals, angels, and most of all other people.

People have moved me and molded (塑造) me with moments of love and examples of kindness.

One time on the day before Christmas many years ago when I was a mill worker with a minimum wage, I found myself with very little money and very little time to buy my small children a few simple toys. I knew that they would have to be cheap ones and I hoped my children would like them. I hated not having enough to give them more. I hated being poor. And I hated feeling bad at Christmas rather than happy.

I pulled into a store parking lot and counted my money again. It wasn’t much but maybe I could get something small with it. As I was getting out of the car I noticed the Salvation Army bellringer (撞钟人) at the entrance. I felt bad again because I didn’t feel I could spare anything to give him. I started walking towards the entrance when two cars pulled into empty parking spots in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Cadillac and I felt kind of jealous when I saw it. “How nice,” I thought, “would it be to have enough money to buy a car like that.” The second car, though, was an ancient sedan, more beat-up (破旧的) and rusty than the one I was driving.

A man hopped out of the Cadillac and hurried into the store right past the bellringer without a second glance. Out of the old sedan came a young mother with three small children. Her clothes looked a sworn-out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the bellringer, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a bill in his red kettle.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 I stood there for a minute in astonishment.

In that second a warmth touched me, my jealousy and hatred left me, and all the love and joy filled me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
