I've never posted a story before. However, upon graduating from UC Berkeley, with as much financial support as my family could muster (聚集), I now feel the need to thank my sister Mollie.

Mollie started out at UC Santa Cruz two years ago when I was already a junior at Berkeley, at a time when my family could no longer afford to support two college students.

We both started working to pay for our housing while our parents were still paying our tuition. Then we took out loans for tuition too.

After one year of college, my sister moved home to San Francisco, took classes at City College instead and started working fulltime. She did this by choice and let our whole family think that she wanted to move home anyway, and that it was for her as much as for my parents' financial situation.

Over the past year, I continued to receive any support that my parents could give. At my graduation two weeks ago, I commented on the fact that my sister was working fulltime as a waitress and asked if she was going to use the money to travel. She said, “No, I'm saving to go back to UC Santa Cruz.”

This probably sounded crazy, but I had completely forgotten that she was saving up for her own college education and making a sacrifice so that I could finish the last year of mine.

I forgot because she never complained and actually had made a less than perfect situation enjoyable for herself. Mollie has no idea how much I respect her for her quiet generosity and for her ability to turn a negative experience into a positive one.

So ... I guess I'll tell her!

B.Disappointed. D.Thankful.

2.Why did Mollie choose to leave UC Santa Cruz? A.She couldn't find a fulltime job there. B.She was forced to pay for housing there. C.Her family was in great financial difficulty. D.She wanted to stay with her family members.

3.It's most possible that this text first appeared ________. A.on the Internet C.in a magazine

B.in a diary D.in a letter

4.What could be the best title for the text? A.Save All the Way to College B.Sacrificed for a Sister's Education C.Work Fulltime for College Education D.Support from Your Family Does Matter

The year was 2014. Val, my best friend, and I just left the university and we went to China together. We found our own jobs in two different cities in China. But we often met at weekends. Some weekends I would take a train down to visit her in Nandaihe and sometimes she would make the trip up to Changchun.

One time, I travelled as usual down to visit her for the weekend. On my way back from her city, I decided to take an overnight train so I could get back in time for classes on Monday. My mistake in this plan was getting a ticket for a noletter train.

In China, there are different kinds of trains. Most trains have a letter before

- 4 -

the number, such as D62. Each of these letters has a meaning, so you can judge_the_speed and comfort of the trains, whose numbers usually begin with T, K, Z, D, or G.

But that day I chose the_train whose number was with no letter. That might be because this train was made before letters existed in China! Not really. But these trains are pretty old. The lower the letter of a train, the lower priority (优先权) it gets on the railroad_tracks,_so they are almost always late. That was the case for me that evening as well.

My train was supposed to leave at 10 p.m. I sat in the cold, empty train station watching my train's arrival time getting pushed back further and further. At midnight I still sat waiting and it was cold in the small station. How eager (渴望的) I was to have a cup of hot_tea or even just some hot water! And fortunately, it was also at this time that I experienced the kindness of the_Chinese_people. One of the guards from outside came into the waiting room and saw me sitting there.

Paragraph 1:

He asked me to follow him, and so I did.

Paragraph 2:

About an hour later my train finally arrived.

Paragraph 1:

He asked me to follow him, and so I did. He led me down to the side of the

railroad_tracks to a small house where he and his colleagues stayed for warmth and a rest. I was met with the smiling faces of another two guards. The man let me sit down and gave me some hot_tea to drink. They tried to talk with me, but very quickly they learned that I was not very good at speaking Chinese, so they just began their conversations. Being tired and frustrated, I also didn't want to talk any more. But they still motioned to me to drink the tea from time to time.

Paragraph 2:

About an hour later my train finally arrived. I said thanks and goodbye to them,

and got on the_train. They waved to me and watched the train leaving. It gave me a feeling of warmth and appreciation for their kindness. I was really impressed by the kind nature of the_Chinese_people.
