In the lecture, the professor makes several points about the disadvantages of school uniforms. He claims that the policy of wearing school uniforms is a bad idea. This contradicts the point demonstrated in the reading that to require students to wear school uniforms has a lot of benefits.
First, school uniforms are costly. The professor believes that students may spend a lot of money not only on those expensive school uniforms but also on their other clothing because they cannot wear school uniforms after class and meet their friends and thus they will still buy some attractive clothes. This is very different from what the reading says that school uniforms are affordable and fashion clothing is expensive so clothing bills may decrease.
Second, school uniforms may increase students’ discomfort and self-consciousness since students cannot show their differences and attractive features. On the contrary, the reading passage contends that if students all wear the same uniforms, they may feel comfortable and attractive, so they may dismiss their anxiety.
Third, students may pick on other aspects instead of clothing. The professor points out that students all want to be different and once they cannot show their difference in their clothing, they may pick on music, bags and some other things. However, the author of the passage states that the policy may decrease the amount of teasing and bulling because many students cannot afford to wear like the majority and therefore can reduce the opportunity for those kinds of intimidating behaviors.
