[要点] turn on 意为打开(自来水、煤气等)开(电灯、电视等的电源)。相关的短语有:turn off“关掉”或“切断”turn down“调小开关关小音量turn up“调大开关使音量变大。这里的on, off, updown都是副词,如果宾语是代词则放在短语的中间;如果宾语是名词,可以放在中间,也可以放在后面。

instruction

作名词,有介绍;用法说明之意,常用复数。如:

I don’t know how to use the machine, either. Let’s look at the instructions.

我也不知道怎么用这台机器,我们看看用法说明吧。

[拓展] instruction还有命令;指示的含义,也常用复数。 如:

The soldiers received instructions to start out immediately. 士兵们接到指示立即出发。

 

memory

记忆讲时,为不可数名词。如:

She played the tune from memory. 她凭记忆弹奏这首曲子。

记忆力;记忆中的事物;回忆讲时,为可数名词。如:

1. My grandma has a good memory for names. 我奶奶对名字的记性很好。

2. One of my earliest memories is going to town with my mother.

我记忆中最早的一件事情就是和妈妈进城。

还有(电脑等)储存器,内存之意,为可数名词。如:

This MP4 has a 128K memory. 这部MP4的内存为128K

 

appear

作动词,有出现;露面;出庭;(在影片等中)出场等含义。如:

It was already past nine o’clock, but Susan didn’t appear.

已经超过九点了,但是苏姗还没有露面

[拓展] appear还可作系动词,意为似乎,好像,看来,用法如下:

appear + (to be) 形容词或名词。如:Jim may appear (to be) a fool, but actually he’s quite clever. 吉姆看上去也许很笨,但实际上很聪明。

appear + to do。如:Mother appears to be talking to herself. 妈妈似乎在自言自语。

it appears + to 名词或代词)+ that从句。如:It appears to me that they are right. 在我看来,他们好像是对的。

初识if从句

 

根据所给汉语,完成下列各句,每空一词。

一、if表示“如果;假如”的意思时,常引导条件状语从句。

二、if从句既可放在主句之前,也可放在主句之后。从句在前,主句在后时,主从句之间要用逗号隔开;主句在前,从句在后时,主从句之间不用标点符号。

三、在“祈使句+ if从句”或“if从句+陈述句”中,if从句中通常用一般现在时。

特别注意

在英美人说或写的正规英语句子中,一般要把名词放在主句中,而把代词放在从句中。所以,将英语翻译成汉语时要把英语中的代词译成相应的名词,把名词译成相应的代词。再如:After he had left college, my brother went abroad for higher studies. 我哥哥大学毕业后,出国深造去了。

lend, borrow, keep这三个词都有的意思,但用法不同。

lend意为借出,即说话人把自己的东西借给别人。常用句型结构:lend sb. sth. lend sth. to sb.

borrow意为借入,即说话人向别人(或某地方)借东西用,一般与from连用,即borrow sth. from sb.(或some place)。

keep意为保存,保留,表示借的持续性,可与表示一段时间的时间状语连用。
