The Song of Beowulf can be justly termed England’s national epic and its hero Beowulf—one of the national heroes of the English people, although until now scholars are still unaware of the author’s identity and the exact year when this great was done. What’s more importantly, it is one of the earliest European epics, which written in English instead of Latin, in thus way, Anglo-Saxon culture has become more clear and easy for us to research.

The epic reflects events which took place on the Continent approximately at the beginning of the 6th century. A Geat named Beowulf from Sweden who crosses the sea to Denmark in a quest to rescue King Hrothgar from the demonic monster Grendel. The hero cut off the heads of the monster and his mother and hastened away to Hrothgar’s court. After receiving much praise, Beowulf ruled as king for fifty years. At this time, Beowulf sought the dragon in his cavern in order to protect his citizens, and after a terrible fight slew the monster, himself mortally wounded, and died after seeing in the cavern the heaps of treasure which he had won for his people. Even after his death, Beowulf continued to serve the people.

It is a treasure and it represents how the England communicated with each other, tells their inner feelings when faced with different situations, describes some culture phenomenon in 10th century. And it gives us vital information about Old English social life and Old English politics. Another characteristic is that the Beowulf poem was passed down orally. The poem contains aspects of Christianity, the coming of Christianity meant not simply a new life and leader for England, it meant also the wealth of a new language. It presents us a view about how the English language has changed in the many years from then until now.

It is the theme of good versus evil that keeps Beowulf earned much praise. Heroes always endeavour to overcome evil, so the good will continue in all kinds of literary theme. Without any deny, the character—Beowulf sets the standard for heroes of all ages, his bravery trials and exuberant strength makes him the model for the modern hero. His first victory over Grendel and his mother, later over the dragon. The passage below from Beowulf gives readers an image of heroes are ready for all the battles against their terrible foes, for instance, Beowulf got ready to face his career and indifferent to death. What’s more, his mighty and brave would soon lead him to win.

It is human nature to desire the light of triumph over darkness. The link between the poem and Anglo-Saxon culture has enlightened scholars to a society that was once under the water, without any awareness. It’s a precious fortune. While the heroism of Beowulf will never cease to attract readers to its timeless theme of good versus evil, as the epic poem continues to be an inspiration to students form generation to generation.
